A brand new Wonder Woman 1984 poster promotes the IMAX experience for when the film hits theatres later this month. The original Wonder Woman film in 2017 arguably changed the fortunes of the once floundering DCEU, with a universally applauded origin story of Princess Diana (Gal Gadot). Naturally, the sequel, which is set years later in 1984 and sees Wonder Woman battling Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah and Pedro Pascal’s Maxwell Lord, is a highly anticipated DCEU project. Unfortunately, due to the unpredictable nature of 2020, Wonder Woman 1984 has been delayed three times. It will finally be released on Christmas Day 2020 by dropping simultaneously in theatres and on HBO Max.
The historic move made by Warner Bros. was somewhat inevitable because of how many blockbusters have already shifted to 2021 and the fact the studio themselves reportedly felt the film would “get stale” if it was delayed any further. Of course, the release will likely aid HBO Max with a subscriber boost, as it will be free on HBO Max for one month, and it will also be the streaming services' first film in 4K. However, as made evident by director Patty Jenkins, the theatrical experience is still highly encouraged. With tickets officially for sale, a new Wonder Woman 1984 poster has come out.
As the release of Wonder Woman 1984 edges closer, Warner Bros. released the latest marketing piece for the film, this time focusing on its theatrical release. In a colorful poster, Gadot’s Wonder Woman can be seen wielding her lasso of truth in her golden eagle armor, as she towers of a big, bold word “IMAX.” Below IMAX, the poster highlights that “Sequences shot with IMAX Film Cameras,” and below that, the “WW84” title finally appears. The full poster can be seen below:
The poster itself, much like previous posters of the film, is undoubtedly eye-catching and visually pleasing. However, it also shows that Warner Bros. is still heavily pushing for audiences to watch it in theatres where it’s safe to do so. The intrigue of watching a big spectacle like WW84 in IMAX, especially with sequences shot explicitly with the 70mm IMAX cameras, might be enough to entice a section of the audience to go the extra mile and watch it in IMAX. Also, despite the poster highlighting the U.S release date of December 25, the film will only be releasing in theatres outside of the States come December 16, so pushing audiences to watch in IMAX would boost the box office numbers.
Gal Gadot’s second standalone Wonder Woman tale has many fans eagerly awaiting its release, and it has the narrative intrigue of finding out how Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor somehow comes back to life. But highlighting the film’s IMAX aspect is a good move, offering another reason for audiences to experience it in theatres. The first installment grossed over $800 million, and due to the film being available for free on HBO Max, it will be interesting to see where the sequel will end up financially. It remains to be seen how Wonder Woman 1984 will fair at the box office, but this new IMAX poster certainly shows the studio is still hoping audiences watch it on the big screen.
