Pokémon GO is offering in-game rewards for players who fire up the app while watching the Game Awards this year. The award ceremony is set to take place tomorrow, December 10th, at 7 PM ET. Several major developers are set to show off updates from their biggest titles, and fans can expect some serious hosting talent from the likes of Gal Gadot and Brie Larson.
A lot of video game companies have cause to commemorate the Game Awards, so an event from Pokémon GO shouldn't be too much of a surprise. The AR mobile app is no stranger to crossovers, jumping at any chance to offer its loyal players a chance at rewards and exclusive Pokémon to add to their rosters. Later this month, for instance, Pokémon GO players will get a chance at catching a shiny Celebi, a rare legendary creature, in honor of the upcoming Pokémon movie set to release this Christmas Day. This special Celebi event will be following hot on the heels of Community Day, a two-day event which will give fans even more opportunities to stuff their phones with hard to find Pokémon.
Players can also expect bonus rewards if they fire up their apps tomorrow during the Game Awards. Niantic has announced via Pokémon GO Live that there will be a special event running throughout the livestream to encourage fans to celebrate the best games of 2020 with their Pokémon friends. During the event, players can expect incense to more effectively attract Pokémon, and more Stardust to be earned from catching the creatures. Team GO Rocket grunts will also be appearing more frequently while the event runs. These bonuses will kick in when the Game Awards start at 7 PM ET tomorrow, and will run 24 hours, through to Friday at the same time.
It's an interesting and distinctly Pokémon GO way to celebrate the Game Awards, and one that, when one thinks about it, doesn't actually have that much to do with the event in and of itself. Fans can easily log into Pokémon GO and take on research challenges with these bonuses at their back without watching the Game Awards at all. Ever since its world-changing launch in 2016, Pokémon GO has been an irrepressibly celebratory game, and offering fans random buffs for an unrelated event like this is deeply in character for it, regardless of how connected it is to the Game Awards themselves.
There are a lot of reasons to watch the Game Awards. More than a dozen games are going to be shown at the event, which adequately serves a dual purpose of celebrating the games of 2020 and getting players excited for the games of 2021. In the midst of all the excitement and anticipation, Pokémon GO fans will have an added incentive both to take part in the festivities and to go out and catch some new Pokémon.
