With many of the most acclaimed writers and directors moving to streaming services because they’re given much more freedom than the movie studios give them, Netflix and Amazon are becoming the go-to services to watch truly creative original content.
Whether it’s elegant black and white foreign movies, war dramas, or colorful historical epics, these two streaming services are releasing high-quality content, and the companies’ competitive nature is working out extremely well for their subscribers. But when it comes down to which service is leading the way with its original movies, a quick look at the IMDb ratings yield some interesting results.
10 Prime: Paterson (7.4)
Being one of several productions that Adam Driver has worked on for both Prime and Netflix, taking a break from being the evilest villain in the galaxy, Driver plays the titular character in Paterson - a struggling poet and full-time bus driver.
Paterson added a lot of prestige to Amazon’s lineup, and Nellie, the film's English bulldog, even won the first posthumous Palm Dog award at the Cannes Film Festival, given to outstanding dog performances in film. It stands today as one of the best Jim Jarmusch movies.
9 Prime: The Big Sick (7.5)
The Big Sick is arguably one of the best romantic comedies of the past 10 years and one of the best movies produced by Judd Apatow.
The movie is also responsible for introducing Kumail Nanijani, who went from a comedian writing heartwarming dramatic comedies to jumping on the Marvel workout routine, getting absolutely shredded, and starring in the upcoming The Eternals. But The Big Sick represents that low budget movies with compelling stories can still leave a big mark on audiences.
8 Prime: Cold War (7.6)
Being a historical drama set in the 1940s in France and Germany during the Cold War, the movie goes down the Titanic route by focusing on a love story surrounded by disaster.
The movie has had a huge reaction from viewers and considering it’s a foreign movie that’s shot in black and white, it had an uphill battle to find an audience on Prime. But its endearing narrative and breathtaking cinematography pulled in millions.
7 Netflix: Beasts Of No Nation 2015 (7.7)
Beasts Of No Nation was the first-ever Netflix original movie and the streaming service didn’t pull any punches.
The movie is an epic war drama starring Idris Elba, who plays one of the most memorable characters of 2015 and was praised for its depictions of child soldiers in the Sierra Leone Civil War. Though it’s the very first movie of literally hundreds of Netflix originals, it still remains as one of the best.
6 Netflix: Roma (7.7)
A more subdued and grounded movie from Alfonso Cuaron, who has made a name for himself with influential sci-if movies such as Gravity and Chrildren of Men, Roma has become another critical darling and won a ton of awards.
Being semi-autobiographical, as it’s based on Cuaron’s upbringing in Mexico City, the movie has become a heartwarming love letter to the city and one of the best black and white movies of the 2010s.
5 Prime: Manchester By The Sea (7.8)
Manchester By The Sea set a lot of precedents when it first came out, as it was the first movie released on a streaming service that was on the awards circuit and up for some major statues.
Michelle Williams and Casey Affleck gave some of the best movie performances of the decade and Affleck even won the Academy Award for Best Actor, which put the idea of streaming services being major production studios into motion.
4 Netflix: The Irishman (7.9)
Netflix is scooping up all the auteur filmmakers and giving them the money that the major studios won't shell out. As nobody was willing to give Martin Scorsese the money he needed to produce the movie, Netflix jumped at the chance to add some prestige to their portfolio.
The Irishman had an estimated budget of around $200 million due to its major stars and de-aging effects, and it was the most costly production for a streaming service ever. The result is one of the best gangster movies of the past 20 years and a surprising and emotional look at mortality.
3 Netflix: The Trial Of The Chicago 7 (7.9)
Though Aaron Sorkin is better known for his incredible screenplays and handing them over to celebrated directors, the writer took on The Trial Of The Chicago 7 by himself.
Sorkin had completed the script back in 2007 with Steven Spielberg on board to direct, but after budget concerns, it wasn’t until 13 years later when Netflix pulled out a blank check. The result is one of the most incredible biographies of the past few years and Sasha Baron Cohen’s second great performance of 2020, after Borat 2, of course.
2 Netflix: Marriage Story (8.0)
Many critics feel that Marriage Story isn’t just the best Netflix original movie, but also Noah Baumbach’s best directorial effort, as it’s a semi-autobiographical narrative that reflects on the director’s experience when he was going through a divorce.
The movie is heartbreakingly realistic and features amazing performances from some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson.
1 Prime: The Handmaiden (8.1)
Being a psychological thriller with a similar tone to that of Parasite, The Handmaiden is a gripping movie that is shamefully overlooked by many due to being a foreign language movie.
The movie is directed by Park Chan-Wook, the celebrated director behind the original Oldboy. Even though it only had a limited theatrical run in the U.S., eventually streaming on Amazon, The Handmaiden became the highest-grossing Chan-Wook movie in North America.
