Modern Family: 10 Of Mitch & Jay's Best (& Worst) Father-Son Moments

Mitchell and Jay have a complex yet relatable relationship with one another on Modern Family. The father and son duo were never close but were always in each other's lives. One of the biggest red flags in their relationship is how uncomfortable Jay was with Mitchell's relationship with his husband Cam for a long time. Everything else is just a cherry on top of their issues.

As the sitcom went on, Jay and Mitchell became closer and did start a new relationship filled with honesty and respect, but they didn't always have good times. Here are some of the highs and lows of their relationship.

10 Best: Mitchell Needed One Night Alone (But So Did Jay)

When Lily was away at a sleepover, Mitchell saw it as a chance for a little "me time." He told his dad how much he wanted to get away to this hotel in the middle of the desert.

He would get massages, read his book, and lay by the pool eating great food. Jay encouraged Mitchell to take the trip but when Mitchell got to the hotel, his dad was there! Jay hijacked the evening and decided to do it himself because of how Mitch talked about it. Though a little head's up could have been helpful, the two men ended up bonding over the book they were reading and ultimately enjoyed each other's company.

9 Worst: Jay Didn't Think Mitch & Cam Should Have A Baby

In the pilot, Mitch and Cam surprised a family by adopting a baby. But before Mitchell could tell everyone about what they did, he alluded to wanting to start a family with Cam.

Jay interrupted Mitchell and told him that if he and Cam were bored, they should get a dog, not a baby... That insult ran deep. He and Cam were not friends that were bored. They were partners who wanted a family. This moment was a terrible one for the father and son.

8 Best: Jay Was Devastated To See Mitchell Leave California

As much as Jay loves to think he's tough, he has plenty of emotional moments (just look at his love for Stella!).

In the series finale, just as Mitchell and Cam are about to leave, Jay rushes over to the Dunphy household to say goodbye properly. "I couldn't miss this. My baby boy is moving away," he said with tears in his eyes.

7 Worst: Mitch & Cam's Wedding

After dating for years and years and raising a daughter together, Mitch and Cam finally got married in the fifth season. The couple had some financial issues while planning their wedding, which Jay viewed as 'a sign'.

He didn't think Mitch and Cam needed to make a big deal out of their wedding. Mitchell told his dad off immediately. He reminded Jay how supportive he was of Claire's wedding and how he hadn't lent them any of the same kind of support. This seemed to be another terrible instance of Jay's homophobia rearing its head.

6 Best: But Their Wedding Also Had Its High Points

Once the wildfires began spreading, Mitch and Cam did everything they could to make their wedding a reality. After venue after venue didn't work for them, Jay pulled through.

He made a few calls and was able to get Mitch and Cam hitched at the country club with a beautiful sunset backdrop. To make the moment sweeter, Jay happily walked Mitch down the aisle.

5 Worst: Cam Was More Than Mitch's Friend

In "Fifteen Percent," Cameron bumped into Jay and his friends while shopping. When Jay introduced Cam to everyone, he said Cam was Mitch's "friend."

Cam didn't read too much into the wording but Mitchell was incredibly offended. It proved that Jay was embarrassed to call Cam his son's partner, or even to admit to his friends that his son was gay. This was not a good look on Jay.

4 Best: Self-Defense By Jay

When Mitchell woke up in the middle of the night thinking that someone was in Lily's bedroom, he froze and relied on Cameron. Cam grabbed a bat and took control while Mitch hung back in fear.

The voice turned out to be a mix-up with the baby monitor and the neighbors but it scared Mitch. He wanted to be seen as a protector. He went to Jay (the biggest protector he knew) and asked him for some father-and-son self-defense moves. It's not often that Mitch went to Jay for help but the two bonded from this moment.

3 Worst: Was Mitchell A "Real" Lawyer?

Mitchell was an environmental lawyer who dabbled in different areas of the legal profession. From the courtroom to the office, Mitchell enjoyed doing it all. But regardless of his law degree or years of hard work and passing the bar exam, Jay never sings his son's praises as a lawyer.

In fact, he doesn't think Mitchell is a "real" lawyer because of his area of focus. This came up when Haley went to jail and when Gloria had more than one car accident.

2 Best: He Stepped Up To Help Mitch With Lily

When Mitch and Cam were in need of parenting advice, they typically went to Claire or Gloria. It's not often they sought Jay's help because he was so dated. But when the family was in Disneyland, Mitch and Cam were having an awful time with Lily on a leash. They hated the leash but she would run away without it.

Jay saw Mitch struggling and took things into his own hands. He got rid of the leash, bought her Disney princess high heels for kids, and showed Mitch that she could barely walk in them. It was exactly what Mitchell was looking for to help with the vacation.

1 Mitchell Began Working For Jay's Enemy

In "The Closet Case," Mitchell was doing some freelance work and was hired by the controversial company, Closets, Closets, Closets, Closets.

The closet company was Jay's biggest competitor and the owner of the said closet company, Earl Chambers, was Jay's nemesis. Mitchell didn't want to upset his father but needed a job. Plus, Earl was kind to him. Jay loathed Mitchell working there and saw it as disrespectful.
