When looking back at The Office, it was clear that Michael was a fantastic main character. Sure, he was immensely flawed, but he carried the series fantastically because of that and his marvelous humor. Yet, even with this being so, it was impossible for fans not to appreciate the other main characters from the series. When Michael left, one would have assumed that they would have handed the boss role to somebody like, say, Jim, but this did not come to fruition. It was strange that they went with Andy, as Jim was a far more popular character.
Jim possessed a lot of qualities that could have made him a great boss at the end of the day. He may have had his rough moments too, but him leading the charge would have made far more sense. He was easily one of the most talked-about characters during the show's run, but he also had a personality that would have allowed him to be a spectacular leader if given a long-term chance to be.
10 His Charisma
Jim's charisma certainly made him a strong candidate as a potential boss. This was something that made Michael fantastic in this position, as he used it to make a plethora of deals (which helped the company immensely).
One could argue that Jim may have picked this up from Michael. There's no question that his charisma could have played a big role in him making a lot of strong moves had he been given the chance to be the boss.
9 His Skills In Sales
Although Jim was lazy at times, he was among the best salesmen in that role. Due to his own skills, it could have been fantastic if the viewers got the chance to see him lead them. Had he went on to become a manager again, his expertise in this area could have also been beneficial to his employees.
After all, Michael helped his employees when they struggled with their sales. Jim's knowledge in this area certainly helped enhance his potential at being a boss. It ultimately could have been very useful and beneficial for the company.
8 His Empathy
Jim showed time and time again that he was a very empathetic character. For example, he comforted Dwight when he realized the beet farmer was heartbroken over Angela (even though the two had been rivals then).
Jim cared for people when they struggled, and that certainly was another huge reason why he could have been a strong fit for the role. Not many other characters seemed to have the same level of empathy as Jim.
7 Everybody Loved Him (For The Most Part)
If Jim had been boss, morale would have been quite well. Jim was a very well-liked character. The only person who seemed to have an ongoing problem with him was Dwight, but this faded as the series progressed.
There were moments where he angered his other coworkers as well, but these were very rare. Thus, had the show made Jim boss, nobody would have been too upset for the most part. He was far too likable of a character.
6 His Work Experience
Interestingly, Jim ran the office for a short time with Michael. Although this storyline ended rather quickly, it did show that he had the potential to be a leader in the workplace.
Besides this, he also had worked for the company in sales from the very beginning. Andy came over from the Stamford branch so he didn't know his coworkers as well as Jim did. Also, Jim's experience truly made him an expert in the area.
5 His Ability To Have Fun
Jim may have seemed a bit calm at times, but he definitely knew how to have fun. This certainly was accepted when Michael was boss, so had Jim taken over, it would not have been too different in that regard.
Any time there was a fun event at Dunder Mifflin, Jim was usually was the one who managed to uplift everyone's experiences. Overall, placing in charge could have opened the door for more eventful occurrences, which would have helped the show's quality immensely.
4 He Was Able To Be Hard On Coworkers
Although Jim definitely was cool and easygoing, he was also able to be hard on his coworkers when it was deserved. In fact, he even called out Michael on his bad behavior at times, and it was always warranted.
Jim also showed this when he was a short-lived manager, as he punished Ryan for not doing his work by moving his desk into a storage closet. While it was funny, fans could also see that this was Jim showing everyone that he did not allow people to take advantage of his kindness.
3 His Humor
An important element of Jim's character was that he was quite witty. Whenever he pulled one of his pranks, he never failed in making the fans laugh- especially as they got more and more creative as time went on resulted. Had the show focused on him taking on greater responsibility than his pranks and schemes would have easily been welcomed with open arms.
It was essential for the manager to be hilarious, as it was what made the series popular when Michael held this position. Although Jim had other characteristics that were more evident, his humor was still among the elite from this series.
2 He Was Reliable
Although Jim certainly showed apathy towards his work at times, he was still deemed as a good employee. This was due to the fact that he always managed to finish his work, not only efficiently, but also very effectively.
This made him one of the most reliable workers in the workplace, even if it was praised a little too much by Michael and the camera crew. Also, this was the case when it came to him outside of work as he was always there for both Pam and his friends.
1 Him And Dwight Became The Hearts Of The Show
It was stupendous that Dwight became the manager at the end of the series. However, it would have been even better if both he and Jim held these roles as soon as Michael left the series.
They were absolutely the hearts of the show once this occurred. Also, their differing personalities would have allowed them to be the perfect duo sharing leaderships roles. Alas, this sadly did not come into fruition, but it would have been great to see them argue.
