X-Men: Each Main Character's First & Last Lines In The Fox Franchise

As fans wait for the X-Men to be introduced into the MCU, many have forgotten that it was the Fox universe of the X-Men that was largely responsible for introducing the trend of superhero movies. These movies showed comic book characters could work on the big screen in exciting live-action adventures.

This franchise began in 2000 with the first X-Men movie and ended with 2019's Dark Phoenix. For such a long-running series, it's interesting to look back and see how the characters were introduced with their first lines and how they ended with their final lines. Given the many timelines of this universe, this list will look at the first and last time these characters appeared on screen.

10 Quicksilver

"What do you guys want?" - "Hey, slow down."

When the heroes have to break Magneto out of prison in X-Men: Days of Future Past, they enlist the help of the speedster mutant Quicksilver who greets them by getting right to the point. He is last seen in Dark Phoenix chastising a student for running in the halls.

Quicksilver's impatient attitude when he is introduced plays on both his powers and his rebellious nature. By the end, he seems to have matured enough to at least act like a responsible adult who looks out for the children.

9 Rogue

"Niagara Falls, up the Canadian Rockies, and then it's only a few hundred miles to Anchorage." - "It's what I want."

Rogue is introduced in the first movie as a young girl telling her boyfriend about her plans for a road trip after she graduates. She is seen for the last time in X-Men: The Last Stand after she takes a cure for her mutant abilities and is explaining to her new boyfriend Bobby that it was her own decision.

Both of these scenes look at the tragedy of Rogue as a character. She is a happy young woman with her life ahead of her before it all slips away. While others accept their mutations, in the end, Rogue just wants the life she used to have.

8 Mystique

"You know people like you were the reason I was afraid to go to school as a child?" - "I love you."

In the first X-Men movie, anti-mutant crusader Senator Kelly is traveling with his colleague when the man suddenly shapeshifts into Mystique and attacks Kelly. Mystique is a hero in the other timeline, and she is last seen in Dark Phoenix when she is accidentally killed by Jean and uses her last words to tell Hank she loves him.

These two lines show just how drastically different the two versions of Mystique are. She starts out as the vengeful villain who hates humanity and ends up being the loving leader of the X-Men.

7 Storm

"John." - "Hank!"

After her wordless introduction when she saves Wolverine from Sabretooth, Storm's first line comes when she is teaching a class and reprimands one of the students for goofing off. Her final line is in Dark Phoenix when she calls out to Hank as they fight off the alien enemies.

Despite being one of the most popular X-Men from the comics, Storm was never given much to do in the movies. This is very apparent with these two forgettable lines.

6 Beast

"Yes?" - "What Raven would have wanted."

Hank McCoy aka Beast is introduced in X-Men: The Last Stand hanging upside down in his office when his secretary calls him in for a meeting. He is seen for the last time in Dark Phoenix defending Jean Grey because that is what Mystique would have wanted.

His introduction is a funny little gag that shows the juxtaposition of this blue and hairy monster in a suit and tie while in a fancy office. His final line simply serves as a tribute to his fallen love and comrade as well as a moment where he steps up as the leader.

5 Cyclops

"Who did this to him?" - "She's gone."

Like Storm, Cyclops is first introduced saving Wolverine. His first line comes when Jean explains Wolverine's metal skeleton to the team and Cyclops wonders who performed such a procedure. In Dark Phoenix, he laments the loss of Jean when she flies up into space.

Cyclops' first line doesn't hold much weight for his character. However, his final line is in keeping with the bittersweet ending of Dark Phoenix as Cyclops has to lose the woman he loves.

4 Jean Grey

"We are now seeing the beginnings of another stage of human evolution." - "It's a new beginning."

In the first X-Men movie, Jean Grey is giving a lecture to some politicians about mutation and the question of whether mutants are dangerous. Her final line is a narration at the end of Dark Phoenix in which she insists this is not the end of her or the X-Men, but rather a new beginning.

The first line speaks to Jean's intelligence and advocacy on behalf of the mutant community which goes far beyond the superhero antics. Her final line is an interesting one as it could be seen as a farewell to Fox's X-Men universe and a new chapter within the MCU.

3 Magneto

"Why do you ask questions to which you already know the answers." - "I'll go easy on you."

Following Jean Grey's lecture, Charles Xavier catches up with his old friend Magneto and asks him what he's doing there, only for Magneto to remind him that he knows what's in his mind. The final scene of Dark Phoenix has Magneto tracking down Charles in retirement and challenging him to a chess match for old time sake.

The two lines speak to the complex relationship between these two characters. The first line finds old friends becoming enemies. The final line has them reuniting after being through so much together and returning to friends.

2 Professor X

"Mutation: It is the key to our evolution." - "No you won't."

The first lines spoken in the very first X-Men movie is Charles' opening narration that explains mutation as part of human evolution. The final line in the final movie is in response to Magneto's promise that he'll go easy on him in the chess match, which Charles knows is not true.

The opening narration is the perfect way to introduce audiences to this world of mutants and Professor X was the perfect character to provide that explanation. His final line is a nice nod to the fact that these two friends aren't afraid to challenge each other.

1 Wolverine

"I'll have a beer." "So this is what it feels like."

Following his introduction in a cage match, Wolverine goes to the bar to order a drink. In Logan, Wolverine finally succumbs to his wounds and realizes what death feels like before he passes away.

The first line seems like nothing more than establishing Wolverine as a rough-and-tumble, blue-collar hero. His final line is a heartbreaking and fitting farewell to this iconic hero. Seeing him make peace with death that has evaded him so long is a bittersweet goodbye.
