NYC TikTok Is Almost Candyman In Real Life | Screen Rant

A viral TikTok series about a New York City apartment feels a bit too close to the 1992 horror classic Candyman. The original Candyman was directed by Bernard Rose and told the story of a grad student named Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) who becomes embroiled in an urban legend. It's said that if someone looks into a mirror and says the name "Candyman" five times, they will soon be murdered by a hook-wielding monster. Candyman went on to produce two sequels, though they weren't as well-received as the first. Tony Todd portrayed the eponymous killer in all three movies.

The Candyman story has received new attention within the past year, as a "spiritual sequel" is on the way. Get Out and Us mastermind Jordan Peele produced and co-wrote the new Candyman, while Nia DaCosta served as director. The film was originally slated for release in June of last year, but the coronavirus pandemic has sadly delayed it to August 2021. Though it initially looked like Candyman wouldn't hold many connections to the original, it's now clear that it is more of a direct sequel. Yahya Abdul Mateen II's main character Anthony is the grown version of the infant who was abducted by Candyman in the 1992 movie.

Though Candyman is still months away, it's all the internet can talk about today thanks to TikTokker Samantha Hartsoe. In a series of 4 TikToks (via CheyMillz), Hartsoe revealed what happened when she looked around her NYC apartment for the source of a strange draft. Upon close examination, she realized the breeze was coming from behind her mirror, which, when removed from the wall, revealed a rundown hallway leading to an entirely new apartment. Hartsoe recounted her entire experience, all the way through her crawling through the space behind the mirror and investigating the place. Unsurprisingly, this has inspired a lot of Candyman comparisons.

Hartsoe's friend notes the experience also holds some similarities to Bong Joon-ho's acclaimed Parasite, but the Candyman references feel far more apt. After all, he's summoned via a mirror, and Candyman found inspiration in a real life murder that took place when an invader snuck into the victim's apartment through the space behind her bathroom mirror. When considering this, it's actually shocking Hartsoe was so willing to climb through. Social media seems to agree: Candyman taught them not to do that.

In a way, this terrifying (yet also somewhat hilarious) experience increases the excitement for this year's Candyman, which looks to provide a new layer to the iconic tale. As the trailers have revealed, there will be plenty mirror-related scares ahead, so fans should best prepare themselves. And it might be smart to avoid poking around the mirrors in their house. Just in case.
