Once Upon A Time: SwanQueen & 9 Other LGBTQ+ Relationships That Could Totally Work (But Never Happened)

In a show like Once Upon a Timethere are plenty of opportunities to find true love and get a happily ever after. Most of the couples rode off into the sunset by the time the series ended, and the relationships that played out were often satisfying to watch and beloved by fans.

Still, there are several other romances that the show could've explored. Once Upon A Time didn't have many LGBTQ+ relationships, and the series would have been stronger if it included more representation. There were plenty of same-sex pairings that would have worked much better than the couples the show decided to go with.

10 Emma And Regina

Emma and Regina, named "SwanQueen" by fans, was the most desired romance that never happened. It's no surprise that viewers were drawn to their dynamic, especially given the popularity of the "enemies to lovers" trope in television.

Their evolution as individuals and as friends was inspiring, and there were times where it seemed possible that their friendship might lead to more. Considering that they're both Henry's mom, parenting him as one family under the same roof would be an added bonus.

9 Mulan And Aurora

For some unknown reason, Once Upon a Time didn't want to give Mulan a happy ending. The chemistry between her and Aurora was phenomenal and watching Mulan fall for her as they searched for Aurora's husband was just as beautiful as it was painful.

Mulan and Aurora had more chemistry than Aurora and Philip ever had, and Mulan always regretted not telling Aurora that she loved her. To this day, the two not ending up together still doesn't sit right.

8 Hook And Charming

Hook and Charming were a fan-favorite relationship in the series. Some people enjoyed them as friends, and others wanted them to become more. When the two first met, Charming didn't think Hook was good enough for his daughter.

They were antagonistic, but their bickering was often like that of an old married couple. Eventually, Hook earned Charming's trust, and the two became close. It would have been interesting to see how they'd act in a romantic relationship.

7 Red And Mulan

When Red was revealed to be bisexual, fans began to wonder if she and Mulan would end up getting together. But, yet again, Mulan is left alone, as Red falls in love with Dorothy.

Red and Dorothy were a cute couple, but they didn't have as much buildup as Red and Mulan could have. It was also hard to care as much about their relationship when Dorothy had been around for such a short amount of time. Mulan and Red would have been the better option.

6 Belle And Anna

It's difficult to understand why Belle ended up with someone as evil as Rumplestiltskin when Anna was right there. They hit it off the moment they met, and unlike Belle's husband, Anna had a pure heart.

Belle and Anna enjoyed each other's company, and the guilt Belle felt after the Snow Queen captured Anna would have been a great opportunity for an angsty romance. The two of them are full of incredible, yet wasted potential.

5 Hook And Robin

Hook and Robin never seemed to clash with each other, which was rare for Hook, especially. He starts off on bad terms with almost every character, but Robin was accepting of Hook and his past.

The duo didn't have a lot of one-on-one scenes together, which only added to viewers' curiosity. When they were together, they got along well, and they always had each other's back. It's a shame that they weren't able to bond more before Robin's death.

4 Emma And Elsa

Elsa was the only person who understood what Emma was going through. Neither could control their magic and they felt like outsiders in their family. Because of how much power they held, it was dangerous for them to be around the people they loved.

It was because of Elsa that Emma was able to embrace who she was, and love her magic instead of despising it. When it comes to shared experiences, there's no one else who would be a better fit for either of them.

3 Snow And Red

Snow and Red were one of the main friendships in Once Upon a Time. They were always together in the Enchanted Forest, but after they got their memories back in Storybrooke, they didn't seem to be as close. In fact, sometimes it felt as though they were never friends at all.

Mary-Margaret was a lot different than Snow White had been, but it doesn't excuse why their relationship was neglected in the present-day. Snow and Red went through a lot together, and based on their interactions in the Enchanted Forest, they would have thrived as a couple.

2 Charming And Kristoff

Charming and Kristoff didn't have many scenes together due to the circumstances, but they were old friends from back in the day. Charming has more of a dry sense of humor, while Kristoff makes viewers laugh by being his loveable and quirky self.

The show missed a huge opportunity by not addressing their backstory or even revealing how they became so close, in the first place. There is clearly a lot of love between Charming and Kristoff, and if the show spent more time on them, it would've been interesting to see where this relationship could go.

1 Mulan And Merida

Mulan spent the rest of her time in the series heartbroken over Aurora. She opens up to Merida about how she regrets not telling the person she loves how she felt. The women were very similar, and although neither one of them are very trusting of others, it didn't take long for them to develop a connection.

After everything Mulan had been through, it seemed as if the show might have finally stumbled upon her perfect match, but like her previous romances, it went nowhere.
