Pokémon GO: 10 Things We Can Expect In 2021 | ScreenRant

2021 is a big year for the Pokémon Company thanks to a number of celebrations, video game releases, and of course an even larger focus on their anime productions. Pokémon Go certainly won't be forgotten about though as players gear up for another fantastic year of content.

While there will be updates throughout the year to fix bugs, change gameplay and improve upon pre-existing material, there's also a number of other changes that fans can expect from the mobile title throughout the year. 2021 may just be another big year for an experience that has somehow gone from strength to strength thanks to a diehard community of players.

10 Honorable Mention: Kanto Tour

While it took place on February 20th, it seems foolish not to mention the Kanto Tour which saw players go back to where it all began. This Generation I gaming experience was something players had to pay to take part in, becoming a much larger community event for hardcore fans.

The Kanto Tour tasked players with catching the 150 original Pokémon from the Pokédex in a set amount of time. It was certainly the start of a much larger idea which could see Pokémon Go continue on this trend throughout the year, with payable events for other Generations.

9 Additional Pokédex Entries

Throughout the year there will be plenty of events that allow new additions to the Pokédex to be added. New entries are always a big deal amongst fans as it's yet another opportunity to catch more Pokémon out in the wild.

While a new Generation may not be added for quite some time, some previous Generations are still being added. What's more, there are multiple legendary Pokémon, various evolutions including that of the Megas as well as variations that are yet to be added to the game which will be appearing in 2021 through upcoming events.

8 New Season

March means a brand new season in Pokémon Go which means lots of new changes; something the game is perfect at in terms of changing up the experience for players. The Pokémon Company has already outlined many of its plans for the new season, which will of course see a number of different research tasks added to the game.

A new season means new battle setups as well and a new league to get involved with online. There's even some fun breakthrough encounters to get involved with alongside March Bonus Hours and upcoming events such as Weather Week.

7 Further Evolutions

There are still some Pokémon that are actually missing all of their evolutions, thanks in part to the number of Generations included in the game. Nintendo and Niantic also like to hold back some content, meaning they don't allow access to all evolutions straight away.

A perfect example is that of the evolutions of Eevee, who has had plenty of different variations in the past. As the Pokédex continues to expand throughout the year, perhaps there's an opportunity to introduce the fairy evolution Sylveon to the game, alongside plenty of other missed Pokémon.

6 Charge Up

As part of the new season coming in March, there's also an event entitled Charge Up which will be all about the game's powerful electric type characters. Of course, these electric types are often the key to raids and taking down gyms in ferocious battles.

What's more, the Charge Up story will actually see a number of electric-type Pokémon make their debut, between March 16th and March 22nd. The narrative here acts as the setup for another much larger event later on in the year.

5 Legendary Search

The following event is being dubbed Searching For Legends which will see the return of some Legendary Pokémon to the game, alongside some Shadow Legendary Pokémon. The event also highlights the use of the compass Pokémon Nosepass, where players could find a shiny version of the character.

It's not completely clear what fans are searching for when it comes to Legendary Pokémon but it may be that Pokémon Go could be gearing up to introduce a range of new Legendary characters from throughout more modern games, or give players a chance to catch older ones that escaped their grasp. This is all alongside the debut of the Therian Formes of Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus.

4 Mega Additions

While evolutions have already come up as a topic, what hasn't been touched upon is the introduction of Mega Evolutions. These create even more powerful versions of well-known characters and are primarily based on Generation I Pokémon thus far.

Niantic are swapping out the available Mega Evolutions incredibly rapidly, but there are a few that have been introduced in newer versions of the Nintendo games that are yet to find their way to the mobile experience. As Niantic evolves the way their Mega Evolutions work, 2021 will certainly see a few new ones.

3 Spotlight Hours And Community Events

Every month Niantic continues to demonstrate why it has one of the best games in terms of community interaction. There have been consistently great Spotlight hours over 2020, where fans have voted on who they want to pop up more frequently in the wild.

2021 is going to continue on that trend alongside a number of other community-based events that will have fans interacting with the games. Asides from the mainline events, other planned community experiences like Weather Week from March 24th to March 29th, continue to help the game feel fresh.

2 Giovanni's Shadow Legendary Pokémon

Giovanni is also returning to the game, as the villainous leader of Team Rocket, who has continued to cause problems for players over the last year. He brings with him a shadowy variant on some famous Legendary Pokémon, which players will have the opportunity to catch.

Alongside this, it increases the number of Team Rocket grunts that players will do battle with as well as shifting the availability of other shadow variant Pokémon. This change in the story is definitely an exciting move for fans as they find out what Giovanni is up to next.

1 25h Anniversary Events

2021 marks a huge year for the Pokémon Company as it marks their 25th Anniversary since the original release of their first game. This is a huge deal for any video game franchise but is especially big for Pokémon which has such a monumental presence in the industry still.

No aspect of the Pokémon brand will be left out from the celebrations and Pokémon Go will therefore be gearing up for some massive events later on in the year. Expect more community events, unique storylines, and of course some exclusive Pokémon to catch!
