Zack Snyder’s Justice League Honors Uncle Ben’s Death While The MCU Doesn't

Zack Snyder's Justice League pays homage to Spider-Man's uncle Ben Parker before the MCU even acknowledged his existence. The Justice League Snyder Cut returns Zack Snyder's DC ensemble film back to its original glory with many narrative and aesthetic tweaks and several drastic changes. While the surprising appearance of Jared Leto's Joker and Harry Lennix's Martian Manhunter were last-minute additions, they did add a new layer of excitement to the apocalyptic story of the Justice League Snyder Cut. One new little detail, however, belongs to a different universe altogether.

Even though the MCU has experienced some very smooth sailing since its inception in 2008, Marvel Studios' expansive universe has also met some significant obstacles throughout the years. For instance, Marvel's beloved web-crawler Spider-Man couldn't appear in an MCU movie for several years because Sony owned the rights to the character. Fortunately, Disney and Sony came to an agreement and Spidey was able to join his fellow Marvel superheroes in Captain America: Civil War. However, Peter Parker's origin story, including the death of his uncle Ben Parker, has been completely overlooked.

It makes sense for the MCU to gloss over this part of Spider-Man's lore given that The Amazing Spider-Man and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man had already told the hero's origin story, but the MCU hasn't even namedropped Ben Parker since Spider-Man's introduction in 2016 despite the huge amount influence he has on Peter Parker's sense of justice and morality. Curiously enough, the scene where the Flash fights a freshly-resurrected Superman in the Justice League Snyder Cut has a blink-and-you'll-miss-it nod to the wise old man in the form of a carved name on the Metropolis memorial monument.

The name might as well be a coincidence, just like the minor character Linda Reed, who was thought to be a nod to the twin sister of Golden Age hero Girl Archer but was subsequently confirmed to be an original character by Zack Snyder himself. It could also be a voluntary reference, as Ben Parker's biggest contribution to all of Spider-Man's stories across the multiverse is always his death. Of course, this harmless nod doesn't mean the unfortunate Ben Parker who perished in the Battle of Metropolis also had a nephew called Peter, or that his death motivated him to pursue a life of vigilantism.

The reference is even funnier considering that it took the DCEU quite a few years to assemble the Justice League and introduce important characters like Darkseid, yet it still managed to acknowledge Uncle Ben's death before the MCU. Zack Snyder's Justice League exceeded expectations and concluded the director's time on the DCEU despite all the logistical drawbacks. Perhaps it's time for the MCU to pay the homage back and reference a certain Boy Wonder who not only died a brutal offscreen death in the DCEU but also never truly had the chance to appear.
