Andor Set Photos Reveals New Look at Rogue One Spinoff’s Spaceships

Photos from the set of Andor have revealed new spaceships in use for the show. The Disney+ project is a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and follows Cassian Andor’s story five years before the events of the film. It has been another five years since the release of Rogue One, which premiered in 2016 and was praised for taking the franchise in a new direction.

Diego Luna will reprise his role as the pilot and intelligence officer during the formative years of the Rebellion. Andor is just one of Disney+’s multiple upcoming Star Wars TV projects, alongside Star Wars: The Bad Batch, which is set to premiere next month. Former Disney CEO, Bob Iger, announced a raft of Star Wars TV shows in 2018, “specifically for the Disney direct-to-consumer app”. The first of these stories, The Mandalorian, debuted in 2019 to fanfare and widespread critical acclaim.

With the show back in production, Star Wars fans have been able to share pictures online, including bespinbulletin who shared overhead shots of the Andor set from Coryton Refinery (Essex, UK). These pictures reveal the return of the Y-Wing, the workhorse starfighter introduced in Episode IV: A New Hope. The Koensayr BTL Y-Wing starfighter ships are the primary fighter-bombers of the Rebel Alliance. The pictures show the iconic craft is currently disassembled, which may be due to logistical reasons involving transporting the prop. This sneak-peek at the set also reveals a number of green screens in use, indicating visual FX will complement practical effects. Check out the photos below:

Work on Andor began in the United Kingdom before Covid lockdowns forced the set to wrap, with six weeks of pre-production completed. Work resumed again in September, with information slowly trickling from the British sets. Pictures from the Andor production released in January, showed the making of a huge Star Wars-style building equipped with green screens in Buckinghamshire, UK. Aerial images of the Andor set released in March, also from Britain, appeared to capture a tense encounter between Stormtroopers and townspeople. The set pictures did cause some initial fan confusion, with some speculating that the production was actually for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series headed for Disney+ in the future. However, a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel confirmed the sets are a match for Andor.

The newly-released photos of the Y-Wing will certainly increase speculation on how the ships might serve the story. The particular prop photographed is the Resistance-era model featured in The Rise of Skywalker (2019), set after Cassian Andor’s death in Rogue One, as fans have noticed. Could Andor possibly take place during the Sequel’s Trilogy storyline, or is there another reason for the prop being on set?
