Manifest season 3 appears to be teasing new abilities for the main characters. The passengers of Flight-828 – as well as other people who came back after long disappearances – have experienced prophetic warnings and visions known as the Callings, but it could be that the show is about to expand on what they’re capable of.
Because of the Callings, the Flight-828 passengers have been able to protect people from harm. Characters like Ben (Josh Dallas), Michaela (Melissa Roxburgh), and Saanvi (Parveen Kaur) have been experiencing them ever since they returned from their mysterious, five-year absence. The warnings they get from the Callings have made it possible for them to prevent tragic incidents and help people in danger. Some, like Cal (Jack Messina), receive different, more advanced Callings. The drawings that he makes have been eerily accurate predictions of the future that the Stone family has come to rely on. However, the characters still lack an understanding of what the nature of the Callings really is and the reason for why they have them in the first place.
Manifest season 3, episode 2, “Deadhead”, indicates that the characters are getting more abilities and new types of Callings. At the end of the episode, Saanvi expressed surprise when Zeke (Matt Long) correctly described the feelings she was trying so hard to conceal. Normally, it might seem that Zeke was just being perceptive, but Saanvi making an issue out of it gives a strong impression that Manifest is building toward something with Zeke. It looks like he picked up a new ability that allows him to sense emotions. It may or may not have something to do with the fact that he’s the only character (so far) to survive the Death Date and lose the Callings. He isn’t one of the passengers, but he did disappear (and return) just like the rest of them, which was why he too received the Callings in seasons 1 and 2.
There’s also the matter of what happened to Ben in the episode’s final minutes. While packing his things, Ben’s hand abruptly began glowing with a strange, white light. This was followed up by a shot of the Flight-828 tailfin, which was first glimpsed in the Manifest season 2 finale. Spotted on the tailfin was a glowing handprint, which was where Ben touched it in the previous episode. What Ben’s glowing hand means remains to be seen, but obviously it’s connected in some way to the tailfin recovered from the ocean. As things stand, no one is absolutely sure how the tailfin can exist, considering that it’s not part of the plane that blew up in season 1.
It could be that Ben’s glowing hand is supposed to lead him to the answers somehow. Comments from Manifest showrunner Jeff Rake reveal that Ben’s hand is a new kind of Calling [via Syfy Wire], but it remains to be seen how it works or exactly how it’s going to help the passengers figure out what to do. Looking at what Manifest season 3 is currently doing with Ben and Zeke, it’s highly possible that upcoming episodes of the NBC series will do more to build on the various capabilities of the main characters.
