The hunt has come to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as three Spirits from Monster Hunter Rise have appeared on the Spirit Board as foes. The Monster Hunter series currently lacks any playable representation in the Super Smash Bros. series, even though a Monster Hunter appeared in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate does have a Monster Hunter character, as Rathalos is one of the bosses in the game. Rathalos has a minor role in the World of Light mode, it appears as an enemy in several of the Classic Mode routes, and can even be summoned as an Assist Trophy. Fans have speculated that a Monster Hunter character would arrive in the game as DLC, especially with Monster Hunter Rise being a Switch exclusive for a year. It's possible that a Monster Hunter character could be one of the remaining DLC fighters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but a giant boss monster might be a better fit for the franchise. But Super Smash Bros. Ultimate now has even more Monster Hunter representation.
According to the SmashBrosJP Twitter account and an in-game notification sent out to players, there is a Monster Hunter Rise event in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It's now possible to battle and win Spirits of Magnamalo, a Palico, and a Palamute on the Spirit Board. This event will run from April 2 to April 7.
The Spirits are represented by existing characters. Magnamalo is represented by a giant blue Bowser, which is easily the best fit for the Spirit, especially as he can also spit flames from his mouth. The Palamute is represented by Duck Hunt Duo, who is joined by a Mii Swordfighter. This represents how Palamutes are used as mounts by the hunters in Monster Hunter Rise. The Palico Spirit is represented by three Pikachu, as they are often encountered in groups out in the wild in the Monster Hunter series. Pitfall seeds from the Animal Crossing series will appear as items during this battle, referencing the Pitfall traps in Monster Hunter. Players will earn extra gold by defeating these Spirits.
Monster Hunter Rise is poised to be one of the biggest Nintendo Switch games of 2021, so it's not surprising to see it receive its own Spirit Board event in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It's just a shame this isn't an announcement for an actual Monster Hunter character coming to the game. Players will just have to be satisfied with the Monster Hunter Mii Fighter costumes for the time being.
The Monster Hunter Rise Spirit Board Event in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will run from April 2 to April 7, 2021.
