PUBG Arcade Mode "POBG" Is a Fully Playable April Fool's Surprise

Whilst the slew of game-related April Fool’s pranks storm the internet, Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds devs take it one step further by releasing a fully playable arcade mode of the game. Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, or PUBG, is an extremely popular battle royale game that has just reached 1 billion downloads for its mobile version. That kind of popularity has made it among the top battle royale games on the market and fans love jumping into and driving to win a chicken dinner. Now, in what fans thought was an April Fool’s prank, the devs bring a new game mode to PUBG, which is now fully playable within the Steam version of the game.

PUBG helped pave the way for the battle royale genre, and March 23 marked the fourth anniversary of the game. Although PUBG players already received plenty of giveaway opportunities to celebrate the accomplishment, the devs went even further and developed an arcade mode of the game for players to try out.

Posted on the Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds YouTube channel, a video sparked a lot of excitement as it showcased a hilarious mockumentary-style film that, in turn, announced a new game mode to PUBG. POBG, as the arcade mode is known, was a fake arcade game that caused extreme chaos among cities as a hardware malfunction caused blackouts when players reached level 3. The devs then explain that the software was fine, and the game actually works very well on PCs. So, the development team released the game for the Steam version of the game, with console versions coming soon.

The video was originally assumed to be an April Fool’s prank. Instead, the game displayed, POBG, is an actual 2D, arcade-style game that can be played within the original PUBG game. With many players are still getting over the fact that the PUBG Low-End lite version is shutting down this month, this new free add-on to the original game on the PC has garnered excitement. Players have been rushing on to get past the infamous third level and do what even the PUBG QA Lead, Steve Marks, could not.

The April Fool’s release is a clever time to release the POBG game, as it has stirred a lot of speculation around what news is real and fake. The PUBG devs have proved the reality of this announcement by delivering the 2D, arcade game right off the bat in the Steam version of the game. Hopefully, the dev team begins work on fixing the ranked matchmaking issues in PUBG, but until then players can attempt to reach level 3 in POBG and earn that chicken dinner.
