Dexter: 10 Things To Remember Before The Revival | ScreenRant

Content Warning: This article discusses strong themes of violence.

Dexter fans rejoiced when it was revealed that the 2006 crime drama show was making a 10-episode revival season. The show met its end in 2o13, but many fans were left heartbroken and upset over how Dexter's (Michael C. Hall) story ended and what happened in the finale. Some even called the show's finale the worst in television history.

To make up for the show's not well-received end, the show will return for a limited time to, hopefully, tie up some loose ends. Showtime released a small teaser on April 30th that had fans giddy over Dexter's return to the small screen. But there are some details fans should remember before the killer's comeback.

10 Dexter's Backstory

It's been some time since the show ended in 2013, so it's a good idea to look back at who Dexter is, his backstory, and how he came to be one of television's most notorious serial killers. Dexter's story starts when he was three years old and witnessed his mother's murder. He is then adopted by a homicide detective, Harry (James Remar). The event led Dexter to have murderous thoughts and desires.

Harry helps reign in Dexter's desires by focusing them on killing escaped criminals as a vigilante. Dexter comes to follow the "Code of Harry," or a set of rules that he should abide by so as not to get caught. The irony of it all is that Dexter becomes a blood splatter analyst for the Miami Police Department, so by day he helps the law, and by night, he murders bad people or other murderers.

9 Who Knew About Dexter's Deeds?

Throughout the show, Dexter's story as a serial killer is complex, at times. Cases sometimes led Dexter to find himself in hot water and his secret possibly being revealed. Before the revival, one thing to remember is how many people know about Dexter's secret and are still alive.

Maria LaGuerta (Lauren Velez) was the captain of the homicide unit who suspects Dexter after finding a blood slide at a crime scene. Now aware that Dexter is a killer, Dexter makes her death look like a shoot-out. Evelyn Vogel (Charlotte Rampling) knew Dexter was a killer since he was a child and even helped develop the "Code of Harry." In the end, she was killed by her son. Dexter's sister, Debra (Jennifer Carpenter), also knew of his real nature, but she also meets her demise by someone else's hand.

8 Who Was Hannah?

Dexter has two main love interests in the show. For some time he dated and married a single mother with two children named Rita (Julie Benz). The two had a child together named Harrison, but Rita is killed in season four by the Trinity Killer. Dexter then meets Hannah McKay (Yvonne Strahovski).

Hannah proves to be a serial killer who went on a spree with her now-deceased husband. She claims to kill anyone who threatens her chance at survival and Dexter planned to make her his next victim. Dexter doesn't go through with it, though, and they start a relationship. Later on, Hannah wanted to kill Debra, but Dexter gives evidence to have her arrested. When Hannah returns to Miami, she and Dexter make plans to move to Argentina to start a new life.

7 Saxon And Vogel

Saxon (Darri Ingolfsson) became Dexter's worst enemy by the last season of the show, but it might be a good idea to remember Saxon's backstory and who he really is, and how he led to Dexter's finale. Oliver Saxon was a charming doctor who dated Dexter's neighbor.

In reality, he was a serial killer known as "The Brain Surgeon" and it's revealed in the last season that Saxon is actually Vogel's son. His real name is Daniel Vogel and he murdered his younger brother as a child. Vogel sent him away to a psychiatric facility and was believed to have died in a fire, but Saxon would later kill him.

6 How Did Saxon Ruin Dexter's Life?

Dexter and the team investigate the case and the MO of "The Brain Surgeon." Dexter originally believes the culprit to be one of Vogel's patients, but he's wrong. At the time, Dexter had a protege in the making who is murdered by Saxon.

After murdering Vogel, Dexter manages to capture Saxon to perform his Kill Ritual. But instead of killing Saxon, Dexter leaves for the airport to find Hannah and for Deb to arrest Saxon. Things don't go as planned, though, as Saxon plays innocent when rescued by Clayton (Kenny Johnson) and kills him. Saxon is determined to kill Deb, eventually does so, and is arrested. Dexter then visits him and ultimately kills him.

5 Debra's Tragic End

Dexter's life came to a halt when Saxon goes after Debra. After Dexter sets Saxon up to be arrested by Debra, he calls her to meet him. But unbeknownst to Debra, she was being tailed by Clayton. Clayton sets Saxon free, believing his lie of being a victim. Saxon then sets out to kill Debra and manages to shoot her.

Transported to the hospital, Debra recovers until she forms a blood clot after surgery, leaving her in a vegetative state. Dexter knows she will never be able to eat, speak or have a normal life. Dexter tells her he loves her and takes her off life support. He then takes her body out to sea and drops her in the ocean.

4 The Boat Fiasco

Part of the reason why fans were confused and agitated about the show's finale was because of the boat fiasco and its aftermath. In the final episode, there's an approaching hurricane that Dexter decides to use as a cover story to take Debra's body out to sea.

Dexter then calls Hannah and his son to make sure they're safe. He then drives his boat towards the hurricane and the following day, Dexter's boat is found obliterated. Dexter is presumed dead and lost at sea. The show's end had many wondering why Dexter did what he did instead of simply finding a way to go to Argentina to be with Hannah.

3 The Real Ending?

After the boat events that presume Dexter is deceased, the episode doesn't end. The final scene of the episode shows Dexter living in the remote Pacific Northwest, and that's it. The show had no real resolution or gave fans any hope of closure. Instead, a notorious serial killer loses everything and decides to go live a life as a nomad, almost as a punishment.

This led to a bigger question by fans that they thought would never be answered. Dexter lives his life-controlling and re-directing his psychopathic urges. To many, it seemed that normal life wasn't in the cards for him. Miami Police also have no idea Dexter was a killer, but the teaser showed that Dexter can't give up his old habits.

2 What Happened To Hannah & Harrison?

It might be a good idea to look back at where Hannah and Harrison left off when the show ended. Dexter, Hannah, and Harrison were set to make a new life in Argentina. After Dexter deals with Saxon and Debra, he calls Hannah to make her believe he's on the way, but he never shows up at the airport.

Dexter's monologue explains how he kills everyone he loves and he won't let it happen to Hannah. In the episode's final moments, Hannah learns that Dexter is declared dead. She takes Harrison and they walk off into the streets of Argentina.

1 Angel's Final Story

In Dexter, many fans came to love the character of Angel (David Zayas). He was a detective who worked with Dexter and was considered to be his closest friend. Angel takes up being lieutenant after Debra has a breakdown, but Angel's story after the finale is still up in the air.

When Dexter kills Saxon, Angel and another detective rule it as self-defense so that Dexter isn't charged with murder. Angel is the one to receive the call from the Coast Guard about Dexter's boat wreckage and death. Sadly, fans might not be able to see where this story was headed, as the actor isn't set to return for the revival.
