The friendship between Lane and Rory is one of the most sincere in the series. Although Rory went to high school out of town and attended Yale, she really didn't have too many friends. Aside from Paris (who wasn't considered a friend most of the time), Lane was Rory's dearest friend. No one was closer to Rory than Lane.
No matter how much time went by, things were always normal when these two saw each other again. They helped each other when Mrs. Kim and Lorelai wouldn't, which made for some incredibly touching and relatable moments throughout Gilmore Girls.
10 Lane Touched Rich Bloomenfeld's Hair, Rory!
In season 1's "Love and War and Snow," Rory and Dean were hot and heavy and Lane was feeling left out. Instead of hanging out with Lane in Rory's free time, she was spending it with Dean. Lane, however, still needed Rory and was going through a ton of personal issues — like touching her crush's hair — that only her BFF would understand.
Rory found out what a bad friend she was being when Lane got snowed in at Rory's house and called her at Emily and Richard's. The following day, Lane was still at Rory's house waiting for her and the two talked it out. No friendship is perfect and it was sweet they could make up.
9 Lane And Zack's Big Day
Is there a bigger day between friends than the day one gets married? Rory was Lane's maid of honor and was happy to help her with anything she needed. Even Lorelai pitched in to help.
Seeing the BFFsget ready for Lane's big day brought back a rush of memories for fans. This friendship has grown on screen since they were young teens, and now they were mature enough to get married and start a life outside of their parents' homes.
8 From The Pregnancy To The Baby Shower
When Lane got back from her honeymoon in Mexico she told Rory about this horrible food bug she got while vacationing. She went to the doctor to find out what was wrong with her and it turns out it wasn't a bug — it was a baby. Two babies. Lane was pregnant and didn't know. The first person she told was Rory. And while Rory was shocked and in denial, she was supportive and assured Lane it would be okay. On the day of Lane's baby shower when she was told to be on bed rest, Lorelai and Rory stepped up to take care of Lane and make sure the day was perfect.
7 A Night At The Ice Rink
In "Face-Off," Rory was annoyed with Jess for standing her up on a Friday night. To distract herself, she went to the local ice hockey game to eat food and bond with Lane. It ended up being the perfect distraction because the two caught up on each other's dating lives and gossiped.
Bonding with Lane again made Rory realize that she deserved more in her relationship with Jess. It was nights like these that fans loved to see — women supporting and uplifting the other.
6 Rory Had To Share Every Detail About Her First Kiss
The moment Rory had her first kiss with Dean, she sprinted from Doose's to Lane's house to tell her the monumental news. The two girls screeched and jumped in excitement. Even Mrs. Kim's interruption couldn't ruin the special moment Lane and Rory were having. When a good thing happened to one of them, it happened to both of them.
5 From Black To Purple
There came a time in Lane's life where she sick and tired of abiding by her mother's strict rules. If she wasn't able to live the kind of life she wanted then she was going to do the only rock 'n' roll thing she could think of: dye her hair.
Lane and Rory went to the beauty store to find the perfect shade for Lane, and they landed on purple. While Lane's mom was away, the two spent all afternoon dying her hair from black to blonde to purple. Lane, of course, freaked out when she saw the final result and worried about her mom's response and made Rory dye her hair back to black. Despite the drama, it was a cool best friend moment (and life lesson).
4 When Rory Lost Her Virginity
In "Say Goodbye to Daisy Miller," Rory ran over to Lane's house to tell her the big news: she lost her virginity. But she didn't just lose her virginity to anyone — she lost it to Dean. Considering that Dean was married, Lane had the same reaction as Rory; she was in complete shock. She listened to Rory's story and hung on her every word. It was one of those situations where best friends were needed, and Lane was the perfect person to go to.
3 Lane Had Nowhere Else To Go
When Mrs. Kim found Lane's second life tucked away in Lane's room, she gave Lane a choice. She could abide by her rules and stay in the house or she could move out. Lane opted on moving out of her mom's home in order to be her truest self but it wasn't easy. The only person she could run to was Rory. Rory allowed Lane to stay with her in her dorm at Yale for as long as she could, and when that ran its course, she let her sleep at Lorelai's. Without Rory, where would Lane end up?
2 Sex-Ed Between Friends
In "They Shoot Gilmores, Don't They?", Rory and Lane are in the library reading up on personal matters that were affecting them. Lane was reading more on childbirth while Rory was learning more about sex. At this time, Lane was pregnant and Rory was in a long-distance relationship with Logan. They were both mortified by what they were reading but tried helping each other with their respective issues — regardless of how separate they were from each other.
1 Goodbye, Stars Hollow
In the series finale, Rory and Lane had a final heart-to-heart on Lorelai's porch. Rory was terrified about her new job and needed to vent to Lane. Lane assured Rory that she would be amazing and that she's been working her whole life for this moment. It was exactly what Rory needed to hear, and it was clear they were thankful for each other's friendship.
