Harry Potter: 9 What-If Theories About Ron Weasley | ScreenRant

The perpetually confused, yet ultimately brave young Ron Weasley was a staple in J.K. Rowling's phenomenally successful Harry Potter series. Ron was the ordinary boy, the one who was never the hero but always the hero's best friend; who fought against his fears, insecurities and inhibitions to support his family and the girl he loved.

Ron, unlike Hermione Granger, was something of a polarizing character. While many fans appreciate the second fiddle who is ready to sacrifice anything for what he believes in, there are others who would prefer to rethink and reimagine the character in different ways, or even ponder over situations where he never even existed. From the possibility that Ron was a young Dumbledore to him being a seer, there seems to be no lack of bizarre theories.

9 What If Ron Was In Slytherin House?

Ron being sorted into the Slytherin House might have been more appropriate for his character that was both ambitious and pure-blooded, feels this Redditor. There are also other fans that feel that he would have been better off at Slytherin House, where he would have had an opportunity to shine, instead of being forever overshadowed either by his brothers or by his best friend.

8 What If Ron Didn't Marry Hermione?

Not only did Hermione's pairing with Ron not go down well with a portion of fans, Rowling herself has mentioned that she regretted the decision to not unite Harry with Hermione.

This Redditor wonders who Ron and Ginny, would end up with in the light of that revelation. The speculation suggests that Ron could have been with Luna Lovegood if he had not been with Granger, while Ginny wouldn't have to worry too much to find suitors.

7 What If Ron Was A Seer?

Yet another what-if theory suggests that Ron Weasley might have been a seer. In fact, while he was always fooling around and was an established weakling when it came to most subjects, he often seemed to hit the bull's eye when it came to predictions.

The fan gives a few examples of how he had made some off-hand predictions at his Divination class and all of them seemed to come true at some point. From rightly predicting money in Harry's future to stating that Harry would be working at the Ministry of Magic, he seemed to get a few things right, causing one to wonder if he had seer blood.

6 What If Ron Was A Time-Traveling Albus Dumbledore?

One of the most mind-boggling theories regarding Ron that had been doing the rounds ever since the books were released was that the youngest Weasley boy was actually none other than Albus Dumbledore traveling through time. The great wizard had apparently used a time-turner to go back in time and support Harry.

According to this Reddit thread, there are apparently some uncanny similarities between Ron and Dumbledore. From the red hair, large hands and feet, to the scars and injuries that coincide, these fans provide a strong argument as to why Ron has been a young Dumbledore himself.

5 What If Ron Was A Secret Death Eater?

Another peculiar theory about Ron Weasley wonders if the young Weasley was, in fact, a Death Eater all along. These fans weave a theory that Ron had been expertly playing both sides right until the Second Wizarding War. It wasn't difficult to imagine him as a master strategist, since he was after all, the best chess player that Hogwarts seen in a century.

This 'what if' idea revolves round the possibility that Ron had always positioned himself close to the source of power by becoming the Boy Who Lived's best friend and making everyone believe that he was the duller of the two friends. He shows little moral dilemma and of course, his pet is Peter Pettigrew, the one person responsible for bringing Voldemort back to life. He was also a pureblood, so it would have been easy for him to be loyal to the Dark Lord.

4 What If Ron Never Came Back?

In the final part, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, one of the most heartwarming as well as thrilling moments in the series took place when Ron saved Harry from drowning in the freezing lake and retrieved the Sword of Gryffindor at one go.

The theory suggests that had Ron not returned as he did, Snape would surely have saved Harry's life instead. Fans will recall that it was Snape who had conjured the Patronus in the first place to lead Harry to the Sword. The surly professor would never have allowed Harry to drown and might have turned up in person to save the boy's neck.

3 What If Ron Had Died?

There was a time when Ron Weasley ran a very real risk of being killed off, as Rowling herself had mentioned that she had toyed with the idea. However, the author decided, in the end, to kill off Fred Weasley instead, leaving the core trio untouched.

This Reddit thread discusses the possibility of what would have happened if Ron had actually died. It spins a story wherein Harry and Hermione would have drifted apart and perhaps in time, Hermione would have ended up marrying George Weasley who would have been as broken over Fred's death as Hermione would be over Ron's.

2 What If Ron Had Been The Chosen One?

Had Ron been the Chosen One instead of Harry, the entire series would have had a much quirkier spin to it. As the lead protagonist, Ron would not have been in the shadows of Harry and Hermione but would have taken center stage as the Boy Wizard.

An interesting take on Ron being the Chosen One suggests that he would have had a W-shaped scar on his forehead instead of the infamous lightning bolt that Harry carried. He would also have reacted in a very typical 'Ron Weasley' manner once Hagrid informed him of his true identity in the very first book.

1 What If Ron Weasley Didn't Exist?

A weird idea is put forth that reflects on the possibilities had Ron Weasley never existed in the first place. Reimagining the Potter stories without one of its main pillars isn't easy to do but these fans attempt to do just that.

If Ron had never existed, there would obviously have been a drastic change in the dynamics between the other characters too. For instance, Hermione had only been in the girl's toilet because she was upset with Ron in Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone, and the three fought the troll together, the event that made them firm friends, only because the boys went to save Hermione. So, Harry and Hermione would never really have been such good friends had it not been for Ron in the first place. Neither would Harry have had a family to call his own, for the Weasleys were, for all intents and purposes, his only family.
