WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for Loki episode 2.
According to Marvel’s Loki show, the Revengers are responsible for the destruction of Asgard in Thor: Ragnarok. “The Revengers” is the name given to the team of heroes that Thor led into battle against Hela (Cate Blanchett). Among Thor’s allies in the group were Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), and the MCU’s original Loki (Tom Hiddleston).
The only MCU events that the Loki variant in the new Disney+ series has experienced thus far are the fights he caused in Thor and The Avengers. Since this particular version of the character broke away from the Sacred Timeline in 2012 after the failed Chitauri invasion, he has no firsthand knowledge of what happened in Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok, or Avengers: Infinity War. However, the Time Variance Authority and Owen Wilson’s character, Mobius M. Mobius, have given a window into his MCU story. In the series premiere, he learned about the deaths of Frigga (Rene Russo) and Odin (Anthony Hopkins), and his own demise at the hands of Thanos (Josh Brolin) in Infinity War.
He uncovered another major incident he was involved in during Loki episode 2. While combing over TVA’s files on apocalyptic events, he came across the one on Asgard’s destruction. Included on the document was the line, “Cause of Displacement: Codename: Revengers”. What can be gathered from this is that the Time Variance Authority’s interpretation of what happened places blame for the MCU’s Ragnarok catastrophe squarely at the feet of Thor, Valkyrie, Hulk, and Loki. That’s an interesting take on the situation, and one that calls for a proper examination of what really happened that day.
Technically, it was Surtur who destroyed Asgard, just like he was supposed to in the Norse myths and the prophecies. But it would appear that the TVA instead holds the Revengers accountable, because it was Thor who set this in motion. Remembering what Odin said about Asgard being a “people” and not a “place”, Thor came to understand that it was acceptable for his homeland to be destroyed if it meant beating Hela and saving everyone else. After making this realization, Thor got Loki to help him resurrect Surtur by placing his crown in the Eternal Flame. It was due to this decision that Surtur killed Hela, and destroyed Asgard in the process.
So all things considered, the TVA aren’t exactly wrong in their assessment. Though it’s typically Hela and Surtur who take the blame (because one made it necessary and the other literally destroyed it), there’s no denying that Thor’s team bears responsibility. While the details in the TVA file may not have made the circumstances and Thor’s involvement crystal clear in Loki, the Revengers sacrificing Asgard to save its people in Thor: Ragnarok shows that the heroes’ actions truly were justified.
