Angourie Rice, star of HBO’s The Mare of Easttown, had a crazy theory regarding Erin McMenamin’s killer. Following limited series such as Big Little Lies and The Undoing, The Mare of Easttown is HBO’s latest murder mystery to captivate viewers and spawn extensive fan theories online. Set in a modest Pennsylvania suburb, the limited series follows Kate Winslet as the titular detective Mare. Already burdened by the loss of her son Kevin to suicide, a recent divorce, and a missing girl, Mare is also tasked with investigating the murder of a teenage mother, Erin McMenamin (Cailee Spaeny).
The Mare of Easttown debuted in April and aired its final episode in late May. Over its 7-episode run, the series sparked fervent fan theories online regarding Erin McMenamin’s murderer, some more likely than others. Throughout the show’s run, various outlets published pieces online listing a litany of murder suspects, including Deacon Mark Burton, Frank Sheehan, and Kenny McMenamin. However, many failed to mention the 13-year-old son Ryan Ross who, in a shocking twist, the finale revealed to be Erin’s killer.
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Angourie Rice, who starred in the popular HBO series as Mare’s daughter Siobhan Sheehan, shares her crazy theory regarding Erin’s murderer. Rice says the cast read the scripts for episodes 1-6, but then the showrunner Brad Ingelsby asked them to guess the killer before reading the final script. Rice shared her theory, which was that Kevin Sheehan, her own character’s late brother, would return in the show’s finale and be revealed as Erin’s true killer. Read her full answer below:
Screen Rant: When did the cast learn who killed Erin and what was your reaction?
Angourie Rice: They sent me [the scripts] all the way up until episode 6. And then the producer, writer, and director emailed me and said, "Before we send you episode 7 [the finale], you have to guess." And I was like... (laughs) "Wait, this is a condition?" And they said all the people we send the script to, we want to get a response as if you're a test audience. So I sent in my guess. I had a wild theory that was not true at all!
My theory was that Kevin wasn't actually dead and it was him. I don't know why I said that, I had no basis for it. I was just like, "Oh, this might be crazy! Maybe they've done that!" But obviously, it wasn't that. So when I read the script, I was shocked. It was so impactful and so heartbreaking. And I think for Siobhan's character, she's not super involved in the mystery but as a viewer and as a fan of the script and the show, it was quite incredible to read that and also just to watch it all play out. To see all the performances, it's incredible.
While many Mare of Easttown theories swirled all over the internet before the finale aired, Kevin was not a very popular choice, considering he died before the show's events. Mare of Easttown’s final reveal was shocking in its own right, but Rice’s theory would have been downright earth-shattering if it played out. But as Rice admits, there would have been no basis for this twist, and in retrospect, The Mare of Easttown built towards its surprising reveal from the very beginning.
Picking up on these little hints dropped along the way, one of the show’s more prominent viewers, Stephen King, was able to correctly guess Erin’s killer in a tweet just before the finale aired. Though Rice’s wild Mare of Eastown theory didn’t pan out, she lent a poignant performance to a gripping drama filled with standout stars.
