Fans of Nintendo's popular video game franchise Animal Crossing are in for new spin on their beloved sandbox garden, as the popular Japanese manga for Animal Crossing's newest iteration, entitled Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Deserted Island Diary, will be receiving an English translation, courtesy of Viz Media. Originally published exclusively in Japan in 2020, the manga, written and drawn by Kokonasu Rumba, will feature a charming journey through the pleasantly quaint world of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and feature characters in the games such as the irascible and possibly-exploitative Tom Nook or the friendly and strangely phasmophobic ghost Wisp in a humorous exploration of the Deserted Island setting found in the newest game.
Animal Crossing debuted in 2001 on the N64, and has steadily accumulated a devoted fanbase over the years through a variety of media (including five main games, three spin-offs and one feature length film) for its laid-back approach, cartoony graphics and emphasis on social communication. Animal Crossing: New Horizons, released in 2020 for the Nintendo Switch, takes this formula, adds in a healthy dose of collectables and a gardening approach to building your own world on your own private Deserted Island, and scored a major hit with sales and critics, particularly during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the franchise has had multiple manga series, including a recent series also based on New Horizons called News From the Carefree Island, Deserted Island Diary is the only one to be officially released in English, and will illustrate a whimsical take on the quirky world of New Horizons, the series' fifth mainline game.
In a press release, Viz Media said the new graphic novel would be "the perfect companion for both seasoned and first time fans" featuring "hilarious antics and adventures with an abundance of fan favorite villagers" in a vibrant and appropriately quirky rendition of the world of Animal Crossing. The release will also include a bonus compendium of information on the premise, such as tips and tricks for the video game and an "animal guide" that provides information on many longtime favorite villagers.
The arrival of this reimagining of the classic video game world in western bookshops, expanding the franchise further into the media landscape like some sort of convoluted plot by Jolly Redd should be no surprise, given its popularity. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the second highest-selling game for the Nintendo Switch, having moved a total of 33.89 million units according to Nintendo. It remains to be see whether or not some of the long-held mysteries of the series will have some light shed on them, such as where Tom Nook got all of his money, or if Blathers will ever get over his lifelong fear of bugs.
Building a world of style and wonder, Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Deserted Island Diary releases September 14.
