How to Earn More Sins in Black Book (& What They’re For)

Set in a rural countryside with demons and magic, Black Book is an adventure RPG where the player aims to unlock the secrets of the titular artifact. This black book artifact is said to be capable of granting any wish, and for players in the shoes of a sorceress named Vasilisa, this is exactly what they need to remedy her aching heart.

After Vasilisa tried to defy her arcane destiny by marrying someone she loved, fate decided to deal her a bad hand. Her betrothed died under mysterious circumstances. Now having to deal with demons and pacify the peasantry, Vasilisa is forced to wander the Slavic countryside as she seeks to unlock the black book’s seven seals.

Sins in Black Book are any bad choices the player makes during their journey. These bad choices are present in almost every quest, and their accrual will result in the Sin counter increasing for each sin made. One good method to get more Sins is to seek out NPCs and talk to them to see if they have a side quest.

Sinful choices in Black Book are not highlighted with a symbol, but players can often tell whether a choice is sinful based on their sinister tone or the negative consequences that would naturally arise from such a decision. Cursing a village just because? That’s a Sin. Terrorizing a village with a chort? That’s a Sin too. Tampering with the Charter in Bigchi Forest? Players will earn several Sins. If the choice results in someone else being hurt or frightened, players can usually expect a Sin. The same is true if Vasilisa ends up supporting someone or something that can be considered evil.

By themselves, Sins in Black Book they do nothing. It is only when the sin counter reaches a certain threshold and players reach the end of the game that Sins actually begin to affect anything. Much like finding all collectibles in other games, the collection of a certain amount of Sins can unlock special endings for the game. What these endings are the player will have to see for themselves, but it should be noted the game warns players that sinful witches are said to “burn in eternal flames with no chance for absolution." But, that's to be expected for a game that rather explicitly deals with sins, demons, and witchcraft.
