Metal Slug Tactics Announces Switch Release In New Gameplay Trailer

Metal Slug Tactics is coming to the Nintendo Switch, as announced during today’s Nintendo Indie World livestream event. Fans have been waiting a long time for the return of SNK’s run-and-gun franchise, which hasn’t gotten a new installment since Metal Slug Attack, a tower defense title that was released on mobile phones back in 2016 to a lackluster reception from players.

These fans are finally getting their wish with Metal Slug Tactics, which was announced at a Summer Games Fest event back in June. Reimagined as an XCOM-style real-time strategy game with roguelike elements, Tactics features a colorful art style, over-the-top action, and fluid anime-like cutscenes as a team of series mainstays faces off against the titular Metal Slug tanks across procedurally generated isometric battlefields using a super attack-fueling adrenaline system and branching skill trees.

During today’s Nintendo Indie World livestream event, viewers were greeted with a new trailer for Metal Slug Tactics, showing off the game’s colorful action and RTS gameplay as heroes Marco, Eri, Fio, and Tarma rolled into action armed with their signature heavy machine gun and SVX-15D Slugnoid mech. Additionally, publisher Dotemu and developer Leikir Studio posted a press release not too long after the show concluded, which announced that Metal Slug Tactics will be available on the Nintendo Switch as well as PC when it launches in 2022.

During the show, Leikir Studios’ Aurelien Loos and Jessica Richard spoke about how honored they are to be working on a new Metal Slug game, noting how important it was to "find a new path” and provide players with a new gameplay experience while paying tribute to what came before. Metal Slug Tactics wasn’t the only game featured at today’s Nintendo Indie World livestream, which showed off exciting upcoming Nintendo Switch like Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeons and the visually striking Tetris Effect Connected. The show was a brief 20 minutes long, but it gave Nintendo Switch owners plenty to talk about in regards to new and exciting indie titles like Slime Rancher, Gang Beasts, and Astroneer.

Metal Slug Tactics looks fun to play, and longtime fans of the franchise are certainly excited with the chance to experience the vibrant comic-book-style action of Metal Slug in this new, real-time strategy format, especially after having to wait so long since the last mainline entry. They will finally get their chance when Metal Slug Tactics finally launches on PC and Nintendo Switch sometime next year.
