Sons of Anarchy: Why Tara Wears Otto's Wife's Perfume (& What It Means)

Sons of Anarchy is full of action and drama, but it also had a couple of disturbing moments that have stayed in the minds of viewers for years, among those the scene where Tara wears Otto’s wife’s perfume – and as awkward as that scene is, it was done that way for a reason. Kurt Sutter took the audience into the world of motorcycle clubs in the TV series Sons of Anarchy, which premiered on FX in 2008 and came to an end in 2014 after seven seasons. Sons of Anarchy was very well-received by critics and viewers from the beginning, with most praise going towards the performances of the main cast and the themes it addressed.

Sons of Anarchy tells the story of Jackson “Jax” Teller (Charlie Hunnam), VP of the motorcycle club Sons of Anarchy in the fictional town of Charming, California. The series begins when Jax finds a manifesto written by his late father, John Teller, one of the founding members of the MC, and in which he shared his plans and vision for the club. These were very different from those of the current President and Jax’s stepfather, Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman), and so Jax goes on a personal journey that leads him to question his path, role in the club, relationships, family, and more. Sons of Anarchy was also full of subplots, all related to the club, and one of the saddest ones was that of Otto Delaney (Sutter), one of the members of the club who spent the whole series in jail and who towards the end of his arc was tortured, raped, and more.

Even though he was in jail, Otto continued to be involved in the club one way or another, but he was also manipulated by enemies of SAMCRO into betraying the club. In Sons of Anarchy season 5, Otto started to be visited by Tara Knowles (Maggie Siff), a doctor and Jax’s wife who signed up as a medical volunteer to talk to Otto about his statement and the RICO case they were facing. Otto manipulated Tara for a while before he agreed to help the club, and in order to convince him to help, she brought his late wife’s favorite perfume. Otto, tied to a bed, asked Tara to put some of the perfume on her wrist, and after she freed his hand, he touched himself before Tara took a blood sample. Later that day, and now at her home, Tara took the perfume out again and did the same thing as Otto while smelling the perfume, leaving the audience confused and some feeling a bit uncomfortable.

That specific scene had viewers wondering about Tara’s mental health and also if anything had happened between her and Otto off-screen, but it was more of a taste of Tara’s empathy and kind heart, even if the scene was strange. Now, Sutter has been very open on his social media about all things Sons of Anarchy and has answered many questions about the show, including one about that scene with Tara and Luann’s perfume. A fan asked what was going on with Tara and the perfume after she took it to Otto, to which Sutter replied that he thinks Tara had empathy for Otto, and no matter how threatening he was, she “saw the sad, damaged side of him”. The perfume, then, was Tara’s way of “letting him get lost in a good memory”, especially as he was going through hell in prison at the time. Tara was one of the few characters who got to see Otto at his most vulnerable, and so she having an intimate moment with the perfume was a way of connecting with Otto, though it also showed that there were some problems already between her and Jax, as many fans have pointed out.

Tara’s visits to Otto in prison ended up in tragedy, as Otto then asked her to bring Luann’s crucifix, which he used to stab a nurse in the throat while saying “Sons live, Redwood bleeds”, which led to more torture for him and Tara being sent to prison for helping Otto. Sons of Anarchy had some very dramatic and tough subplots, and Otto’s is by far the most tragic one, and his actions ended up affecting the club and those close to it deeper than he could have anticipated.
