2021's Cutest Pettable Video Game Animals | Screen Rant

Some of the most beloved allies and companions in video games have been animals, and from Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut to Far Cry 6, 2021 gave players some seriously cute critters to pet. In the last few years, more and more games have allowed players to give their treasured pets a pat on the head or a scratch behind the ears, and this year has granted gamers some extremely good boys that deserve lots of love.

With companions like Dogmeat from Fallout 4 and Polterpup from Luigi’s Mansion 3, the ability to pet animals in video games has become something that players actively seek out. Not only are video game animals becoming increasingly pettable, but they also have lots of new tricks, adorable animations, and charming personalities that make petting them absolutely irresistible. In fact, petting animals has become an important part of unlocking achievements, items, and story progression in some games. There’s even a Twitter account dedicated to cataloging pettable video game animals for those asking that all-important question: can you pet the dog?

Whether it’s a precious companion or a compelling quest-giver, players love having the option to show their favorite video game animals lots of affection and appreciation, such as with the cats in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla. It’s easy to get attached to these furry friends, especially when they work so hard and look so cute, and the thrill of finding the “Pet” button is undeniable for gamers and animal-lovers alike. From head to tail, these are the cutest, most pettable animals of 2021.

Ranpo is Lost Judgement’s Detective Dog, a crime-solving canine who waits for Yagami outside of the Yokohama 99 Detective Agency. Once Amasawa’s clever shiba inu smells trouble, he’ll stay on the trail until the case is closed. Upon completion of the “A New Partner?” side case, the player can acquire him as a gadget. Yagami can team up with Ranpo whenever a case requires scent-tracking, but Ranpo can also be taken for a walk and pet as a fun break from the action. He’ll even sniff out items and rewards, some of which can only be found when walking him.

In addition to Ranpo, Judgement lets players make a cat friend as part of the side case, “The Forbidden Taste.” Befriending cats by naming, petting, and feeding them will reward the player with items and increase their “pawpularity” in Yokohama. If they get close enough, this feline friend may even lead the player to something tasty.

Chorizo is one of five Amigos in Far Cry 6. He distracts enemies with his cuteness, heals the player when they pet him, and tenaciously follows the fight to help the rebellion wherever Dani calls. It’s hard not to love a puppy, and it’s downright impossible not to love one as precious as Chorizo. Everything this little pup does is absolutely adorable, and he endears himself to everyone around with his big brown eyes and clever tricks. Philly’s furry friend is both fierce and irresistible, diving into the thick of the action in his homemade wheelchair.

To acquire Chorizo in Far Cry 6, players must complete two quests with him after making their way to Montero Farm. The first, “Who’s a Good Boy?” has players find the ingredients to make Chorizo his favorite meal, Jambalaya al estilo de Chorizo. After that, Chorizo will lead the players through his “Fetch Quest” to show them several stashes of treasure hidden around Montero Farm. Completing both quests will bring Chorizo aboard as an Amigo, at which point the player can call on him for his many useful abilities—or just to pet his cute puppy face.

In Sound Mind is a riveting psychological horror game, with a much-needed pettable cat to calm the player’s nerves. Tonia is a sweet, talkative white cat that appears in Desmond Wales’ office and helps him get to the bottom of what’s been happening to his patients, and to the rest of Milton Haven. Not only can the player pet her after listening to each of the patients’ tapes, but she’ll also give them guidance that helps the player progress and provides important information.

Tonia’s wisdom and charm are a welcome break in the midst of the fear-induced horrors that Desmond faces while listening to each tape. Petting Tonia will reward the player with the “GOTY 10/10” achievement, and it will also make this curious companion very happy. In Sound Mind shows the importance of supporting one another, and luckily Tonia is always there to help players with patience and grace.

Unsighted has four pixelated pooches that Alma must rescue, all of which can be petted. Tobias, the owner of the pet shop in Gear Village, will reward the player for rescuing his missing dogs and taking care of them while Alma is out recovering the five Meteor Shards. The player can take any of these dogs as a companion with them to help them fight enemies, as well as to keep them company throughout the game's story. While exploring Unsighted's Metroidvania world of Arcadia, the dog will let the player know when they are hungry or tired and will start to cry if their needs are ignored for too long. The player can even earn and equip a dog chip that will increase the damage canines do in combat once all four have been rescued.

Barkimedes is a big, beautiful dog located just outside of the Armine Excavation in New World. He belongs to Simon Grey, the final boss of the dungeon, but, unlike his owner, he’s friendly—and very cute. Not only is he extremely pettable, but he also starts the expedition “Bones for Barkimedes.”

Once the player gives him three succulent bones, he’ll reward them with Barkimedes’ Puppy, a pet that the player can keep in their home. New World regularly rewards players with gear, but this puppy is one of its best rewards. Barkimedes’ Puppy can also be petted, just like his dad. The “Bones for Barkimedes” expedition is repeatable, and the player can return to pet Barkimedes as much as they want.

The Last Friend is the dog-lover’s delight. This indie tower defense game lets players rescue dogs and build turrets for them in an RV adventure with plenty of strategy and combat. There are more than forty dogs that Alpha and T. Juan can rescue, and, yes, every single one of them can be pet when the player sets up camp.

Each dog comes with its own special turret ability, which can be built strategically as the team works together to beat up bad guys and collect scrap. The spectacular art style of this game makes petting these pooches downright wonderful, and T. Juan even gives players the option to gossip with him, making this a must-play for those whose favorite part of any game is getting to pet the dog.

Ghost of Tsushima is as much about violence as it is about peacefully exploring the serene Japanese countryside and interacting with the local wildlife. In addition to Ghost of Tsushima's fox shrines, the Director's Cut of the game allows players to find several different animal sanctuaries located throughout Iki Island, and they can pet these serene creatures to their heart’s content. Iki Island features nine cat, deer, and monkey sanctuaries, three of each type.

By playing Jin’s mother’s songs in Ghost of Tsushima, the player can honor the sanctuaries and gain the animals’ trust. Each type of sanctuary will grant a charm that can be upgraded by visiting the other sanctuaries of its kind, unlocking some powerful perks as well as an achievement once all nine have been honored.
