Call of Duty: Vanguard's Alternate WW2 Ending Story Set Up In Trailer

Editor’s Note: A lawsuit has been filed against Call of Duty publisher Activision Blizzard by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, which alleges the company has engaged in abuse, discrimination, and retaliation against its female employees. Activision Blizzard has denied the allegations. The full details of the Activision Blizzard lawsuit (content warning: rape, suicide, abuse, harassment) are being updated as new information becomes available.

A new campaign trailer for Call of Duty: Vanguard showcases some of the bombastic World War II action the story will pack, giving more insight into the four characters in secret international special forces group Vanguard. As rumored before its reveal, Call of Duty: Vanguard follows the diverse group in their efforts to prevent Nazi Germany from resurging after Adolf Hitler's death and the Battle of Berlin.

Developer Sledgehammer Games hasn't shared many campaign details since it showed a gameplay demo of Call of Duty: Vanguard at Gamescom 2021. The demo showcased Soviet Russian sniper, Lt. Polina Petrova, stalking Nazi soldiers in the rubble of Stalingrad. Petrova is one of Vanguard's four playable heroes, all of whom appear to specialize in different forms of combat and operations. Based on the characters and locations shown so far, Vanguard's campaign could be one of the most diverse in the Call of Duty series, potentially allowing for different playstyles and set pieces to keep each level fresh.

The latest Call of Duty: Vanguard trailer dives a bit deeper into the story. The initial reveal trailer for the game only scratched the surface of what the in-universe plot would entail, but this new trailer reveals more about the Allied characters and a Nazi scheme to prolong WW2 and establish a Fourth Reich. Call of Duty: Vanguard's heroes are based on real-life soldiers, but it's still a fictional story and not a direct adaptation of things that actually happened - as was generally done in past Call of Duty games set during the conflict.

Based on the trailer, the campaign looks to retain the chaotic, cinematic elements that the series is known for. This will be the second WW2-era game from Sledgehammer, but the developer was originally intended to release what eventually became Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. It's an open rumor that Sledgehammer was pulled off the project in 2019 and Treyarch took over and reworked it into a Black Ops subseries game. Sledgehammer then apparently began work on Call of Duty: Vanguard for a 2021 release, giving the studio only two years to develop the game instead of the franchise's standard three-year production cycle.

Sledgehammer also recently allowed players to go hands-on with the game, but it left some disappointed. The Call of Duty: Vanguard beta had hackers, a widespread problem that has plagued the series for the last few years. Although publisher Activision and Warzone developer Raven Software promise Vanguard will introduce a new anti-cheat system, some players remained concerned it won't be enough to keep cheaters at bay.
