Since the release of The Crown's first season in 2016, Netflix viewers have become obsessed with the ups and downs of Queen Elizabeth II's life as she becomes acquainted with her role of queen. For the first two seasons, actors Claire Foy and Matt Smith portrayed the queen and Prince Philip during their younger years. For seasons three and four, Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies take on the new role of the queen and prince in the '70s.
Throughout the current three seasons, we've seen both accurate and dramatic portrayals of acts in history and within the Crown. As one of the most successful shows of our time, let's take a look at 10 things fans of The Crown didn't realize.
10 THE CROWN IS THE SECOND MOST EXPENSIVE NETFLIX SHOW TO AIR
If you're one of the many who are wondering how much production cost for The Crown, it's much more than any fan realized. After all, portraying the life of the queen and Great Brittan throughout different eras in time is no cheap thing.
According to the show's IMDb page and The Guardian, Netflix was willing to shell out $130 million for the first two seasons alone. Give or take, The Crown's production cost around $6.5 million an episode.
9 IT'S ALL IN THE EYES
In real life, Queen Elizabeth II has beautiful blue eyes. Likewise, Claire Foy - the actress who portrayed your Majesty for the first two season - also has blue eyes. Actress Olivia Colman who portrays the Queen in the third and fourth seasons, however, has brown eyes.
According to reports, Colman (who has brown eyes) tried wearing blue contact lenses but it was said that it "negatively affected her performance." Instead of lenses, production was going to use CGI to make her eyes blue but producers thought it cheapened Colman's role. Instead of fighting it, Colman kept her natural eyes for the role.
8 IS PRINCESS EUGENIE REALLY A FAN OF THE CROWN?
Princess Eugenie is the daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York. This makes Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip her grandparents. Considering Princess Eugenie is 29 years old, she's the perfect blend of royalty and a modern woman.
According to People, Princess Eugenie watches The Crown. In her own words, "It is filmed beautifully. The music is wonderful, the story is beautiful. You feel very proud to watch it. I can’t speak for everyone, but that’s how I felt when I watched it.”
7 KING GEORGE REALLY DID HAVE A SPEECH IMPEDIMENT
In the first season of The Crown, we truly get a feel for King George VI. He's a lovely and passionate man who tried his best to keep his family close, despite the complexities the crown brings.
As we know, King George VI was diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away in his sleep. However, during his reign - and even more noticeable during his illness - King George VI had a strong stutter, which actor Jared Harris nearly perfected.
6 IT ONLY TOOK 20 MINUTES TO GET READY
As many Crown fans know, John Lithgow is the only non-British person in the entire series, but his portrayal of Winston Churchill was so captivating, it would be a disservice not to have him take the lead.
When it came time to film Lithgow thoroughly studied Churchill's dialect, how he acted, and mimicked his body language. By the time he was called on to set, it only took 20 minutes to get into character. From the makeup to the wig to the "plate" in the back of his mouth to help his speech, he was ready for the spotlight very fast.
5 HELENA BONHAM CARTER WAS MORE CONNECTED TO PRINCESS MARGARET THAN WE THOUGHT
For the third and fourth seasons of The Crown, actress Helena Bonham Carter took over for Vanessa Kirby to portray the queen's sister, Princess Margaret. Before Helena took on the role, she met with a psychic to have Princess Margaret's blessing before portraying her on-screen. Furthermore, it appears the great actress has more in common with Princess Margaret than other actresses because her uncle actually dated her!
According to Bonham Carter, "He was in the Grenadiers, I think, and he guarded Margaret and Elizabeth at Windsor. And then they met, and I think there was a romance. He was really dashing..." As we know, Mark Bonham Carter and Princess Margaret didn't last but they stayed friends.
4 DIRECTOR PETER MORGAN HAS A FONDNESS FOR THE ROYALS
Peter Morgan created The Crown, which if you've been following his work, isn't too far off from his other projects. He's been surrounding himself with Queen Elizabeth II's reign for years.
His screenplay, The Queen, released in 2006 and his play, The Audience, released in 2015 starring Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II. But I think it's safe to say that The Crown is his shining moment.
3 CLAIRE FOY WAS PREGNANT WHEN SHE AUDITIONED FOR THE ROLE
While we've seen actress Claire Foy go through three pregnancies as Queen Elizabeth II in the first two seasons of The Crown, her maternal instincts were in high gear during auditions.
While auditioning for the role, casting director Nina Gold told Insider that Foy was pregnant for her audition. "After a few other auditions, [Foy] was in the full regalia with tiara, long gloves, and gown. And it's worth noting that she was six months pregnant with a lovely, huge belly. But all of us completely ignored that bit." It just goes to show that Claire knocked the audition out of the park.
2 FELICITY JONES VS. CLAIRE FOY
Two years before the first season of The Crown aired, actress Felicity Jones was said to take on the role of Queen Elizabeth II. But after Claire Foy read for the same part, it became clear that Foy was the frontrunner.
Foy went on to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress, a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress, and two SAG Awards!
1 A SLIGHT ISSUE WITH THE TIME OF DAY
Although The Crown is fantastic, there was a slight error in filming that fans noticed. In the episode "Dear Mrs. Kennedy," we see the oddly uncomfortable meeting between the queen and the First Lady. However, they appeared to mend fences by the end of the episode.
When Queen Elizabeth II is later told that President Kennedy had been assassinated, it was daytime. This doesn't make sense considering the time difference between Britain and the States. If JFK was killed in the afternoon in Texas, it would have been at least dusk in England when the Queen heard the news.
