Sarah Paulson's 10 Best Movies, According To Rotten Tomatoes

Over the past 25 years, Sarah Paulson has become one of the best actresses to grace both the big and small screen. The Golden Globe and Emmy winner got her start as a guest-star on Law & Order in 1994 and has since continued to shine on television. In 1999, Paulson earned a breakout role in the film The Other Sister, which catapulted a rich film career for the next two decades to come.

Up next for Paulson is Run, a Mother's Day horror/thriller about a young homeschooled girl who suspects her mother (Paulson) is harboring a deep dark secret. As we anticipate the film's release on May 8th, here are Paulson's 10 best movies, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

10 Diggers (2006): 70%

In the 2006 period-comedy Diggers, Paulson more than holds her own among a who's who of hilarious actors such as Paul Rudd, Ken Marino, Ron Eldard, and Josh Hamilton.

Set in 1970s Long Island, the film charts the progress, or lack thereof, among a group of close friends dealing with adulthood. With gigantic changes on the brink, the friends simply want to maintain their simple small-town way of living. Paulson plays Julie, one of the friends who lean on Gina (Maura Tierney) and Zoey (Lauren Ambrose) in a time of need.

9 Abominable (2019): 81%

Despite the title, there's apparently plenty to love about Abominable, the 2019 animated film about a trio of teens out to help a lost Yeti find its family.

Of course, the title refers to the Abominable Snowman, a Yet-like creature of ancient lore. Paulson plays Dr. Zara in the film, lending her voice to a cartoon role for the first time since Family Guy. With a worldwide gross of roughly $190,000,000, it wouldn't be surprising if an Abominable 2 hit cinemas in the next couple of years.

8 Serenity (2005): 82%

In Joss Whedon's long-awaited big-screen adaptation of cult-series Firefly, Paulson played Dr. Caron in the 2005 release of Serenity.

The comedic sci-fi romp follows the quirky crew of Serenity, a space vessel containing a perilous fugitive with a grave secret. As Captain Mal (Nathan Fillion) tries to get his ship in order, a battle of wills ensues between the fugitive, a rogue crew, and a high-powered military. Paulson stars opposite Michael Hitchcock as one of two doctors caught in the mayhem.

7 Swimmers (2005): 83%

Of Paulson's 10 best movies according to RT, easily the least-known title belongs to the 2005 film, Swimmers. Have you seen it? Thought not!

Written and directed by Doug Sadler, the movie centers on Emma (Tara Devon Gallagher), an 11-year-old girl who begins to question her parents' motives following an unspeakable tragedy in their tiny fishing hamlet in Maine. Paulson plays Merill, a scarred young woman who offers solace to Emma before getting romantically involved with Emma's older brother.

6 The Post (2017): 88%

You know you've made it to the top of the mountain as an actor when Steven Spielberg casts you in an important role. For Paulson, said role came in the 2017 film, The Post.

Based on the real U.S. government coverup in the 1970s, known as the Pentagon Papers, the story follows the Washington Post's dogged effort to expose the truth. Editor-in-chief Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks) made the tough decision to pursue the story, despite the blowback. Paulson plays Bradlee's wife, Tony, who often serves as Ben's conscience.

5 Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011): 89%

For a startling look into the brainwashing mechanisms of a cult, look no further than Sean Durkin's upsetting movie Martha Marcy Mary Marlene!

Elizabeth Olsen stars as Martha, an impressionable young woman trapped in the throes of a dangerous cult disguised as a bohemian community. When she escapes and seeks refuge from her sister Lucy (Paulson), Martha can't quite escape the psychological hold the cult has on her. As for Lucy, she isn't quite willing to give up and turn her back on family!

4 Blue Jay (2016): 90%

The granular slice-of-life details in the genuinely moving indie romance film Blue Jay is bested only by the sharp performances by its two leads, Paulson and Mark Duplass.

The story tracks wayward loners, Jim and Amanda, two high-school sweethearts who accidentally run into each other in their hometown several years after separating. As they reminisce and visit old neighborhood haunts, past wounds are opened while new triumphs are found. Touching, tearful, and truly tremendous!

3 Carol (2015): 94%

Todd Haynes's breathtakingly beautiful tale of a forbidden lesbian romance in Carol features some of the finest performances from all the major players, Paulson included. Funny how that works, huh?

The movie tells of the unlikely romance between Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara), an aspiring photographer who falls head over heels in love with a ravishing older woman named Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett) in New York during the 1950s. Paulson gives a tremendous supporting turn as Abby Gerhard, the former girlfriend of Carol who emboldens her to follow her heart.

2 12 Years A Slave (2013): 95%

Steve McQueen's Best Picture-winning 12 Years a Slave tells the true story of Solomon Northup, a free Northern black man who is kidnapped and consigned to a life of slavery in the Antebellum South.

For her part, Paulson turned in a searing performance as Mistress Epps, the cruel-hearted wife of the equally evil Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender), a physically and sexually abusive slavemaster who rapes and beats his captives. Because of the difficult subject matter that confronts America's original sin, it's arguably Paulson's most important film to date.

1 Mud (2012): 97%

In the intense coming of age story in Mud, two young boys unwittingly stumble on a charismatic outlaw on an island in the Mississippi River. Alright, alright, alright!

Indeed, when Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) happen upon a man named Mud (Matthew McConaughey), they fear for their lives. However, over time the boys begin to help Mud evade the law, who in turn imparts pearls of wisdom that they boys will forever cherish. Paulson plays Ellis' mother, Mary Lee, a downtrodden Arkansas native.
