Most of the problems that arise between Yennefer and Tissaia come early on in their lives together, before they’re fully able to really understand one another.
While they come to get one another by the end of The Witcher, season one, a lot of these fundamental misunderstandings and callous interactions lead to some truly cruel actions between Tissaia and Yennefer.
10 Tissaia Bought Yennefer For Four Marks
When Tissaia goes to take Yennefer away from her family and bring her to Aretuza instead, she does it in a way that completely devalues Yennefer, treating her as property and completely destroying her self-worth — if she had any to begin with. In The Witcher, four marks is canonically less than half the cost of buying a pig, and that’s how much Tissaia buys Yennefer for from her father. From her father. The facts that Yennefer’s mother gives up on helping and that Tissaia apparently doesn’t care for Yennefer just make it all the more clear that Tissaia does not value Yennefer.
9 Yennefer Attacks Tissaia With Lightning
While Yennefer is being trained, she’s having a hard time accessing her abilities and channeling her magic. Tissaia knows that Yennefer is capable of great things, and pushes her to try harder. In fact, at some points, she pushes her too hard, in Yennefer’s opinion. One of those times is when Yennefer is attempting to channel lightning. She struggles in front of everybody and, when she finally does channel the lightning with a burst of chaotic energy and emotion, she directs the lightning at Tissaia. In spite of the fact that Tissaia is trying to help her, Yennefer simply attacks her in response with brute force.
8 Tissaia Locks Yennefer Up In Aretuza
Even more blatantly and obviously cruel, Tissaia actually locks Yennefer up in Aretuza when she’s first brought there. Yennefer has been purchased for less than half the price of a pig, torn from the only life and family she’s ever known, and brought to an unfamiliar and terrifying place — just for Tissaia to lock her up by herself.
Of course Yennefer smashes a mirror in the room she’s locked up in and attempts to kill herself; by this point, Tissaia has shown nothing but disdain and disinterest in her, from Yennefer’s point of view.
7 Yennefer Doesn’t Understand What Tissaia’s Done For Her
When Fringilla is chosen to go to Aedirn and Yennefer is instead sent to Nilfgaard, Yennefer is, understandably, upset about this decision. However, she takes her anger out on Tissaia, the one person who tried to stop this from happening. Tissaia argues with the Chapter to keep Yennefer from being sent to Nilfgaard, even going so far as to accuse Artorius of nepotism (Fringilla being his niece), but, in the end, the Chapter puts the decision to a vote, and Tissaia is overruled. When Yennefer blows up at Tissaia for this decision and runs off, ruining all the plans that the Chapter and Tissaia have been laying out, she’s attacking Tissaia for something that wasn’t even her fault or her doing.
6 Tissaia Berates Yennefer In Front Of Everyone
When Yennefer struggles in her classes in Aretuza, she understandably attempts to adapt to the skill levels and abilities of the other girls around her. When she’s incapable of using her abilities to access her telepathy and read one of the other girls’ minds, she instead chooses to lie about it, hoping against hope that she can get more practice later. Instead, Tissaia tears Yennefer a new one in front of everyone. She goes beyond scolding her into truly berating her before the entire class, isolating Yennefer even further and hurting her beyond words.
5 Yennefer Blows Tissaia’s Plan
After situations like Tissaia berating Yennefer in front of everyone, it’s not surprising that Yennefer would want to do her own thing and go to the Aretuzan ball as her fully-transformed self, against all of Tissaia’s advice and wishes.
However, because this goes directly against all the plans Tissaia has been making for the good of everybody, this decision directly spits in Tissaia’s face. Though, for Yennefer, it’s a choice that makes sense for her, she’s completely ignoring the greater plans here and not even considering Tissaia as she acts.
4 Tissaia Doesn’t Approve Of Yennefer’s Choices
When Yennefer is sent to Nilfgaard instead of Aedirn, like she’d been promised, she’s understandably distraught. Even though the reasons do make sense in the context the Chapter provides, and even though Tissaia tried to stop this from happening, Yennefer decides to embrace the self she’s been trying to become this whole time. Yennefer doesn’t do as she’s told, instead showing up to the Aretuzan ball having transformed without Tissaia’s knowing. At that point, Tissaia becomes completely angry and turns on Yennefer without understanding why she’s done what she’s done.
3 Yennefer Doesn’t Speak To Tissaia For Thirty Years
Since Tissaia blows up at Yennefer without understanding why she does what she does, Yennefer decides she doesn’t want anything to do with Tissaia. As a result, Yennefer and Tissaia don’t speak for thirty years. Thirty years. Yennefer completely destroys her relationships with everyone she knows, Tissaia included, and drops off the grid. While she’s in hiding, though, she begins wreaking havoc as a result of her lack of control. Then, when Tissaia shows up to help her, Yennefer just immaturely blows her right off again.
2 Tissaia Refuses To Understand Yennefer
Throughout their relationship, Tissaia time and time again just refuses to understand where Yennefer is coming from, or why she does the things she does. She’s had a horribly difficult upbringing and is struggling to survive and discover herself, and Tissaia doesn’t seem to care.
When, after thirty years of not speaking, Tissaia seeks out Yennefer again, she starts out by scolding her for her actions instead of speaking with her. She says she wants to help, but she just proves again that she isn’t thinking of Yennefer as a person.
1 Yennefer Endangers Tissaia’s New Students
In spite of everything, Yennefer does want to do what’s right. However, she struggles with knowing what that is. When she finds out the state of Aretuza and the compromises Tissaia has had to make in the intervening decades, she decides to take matters into her own hands. In the process, though, she endangers Tissaia’s new students, their lives, and Tissaia’s way of life. She doesn’t understand the growth and change that’s necessary for her to actually help Tissaia and the cause. Luckily, though, by the end of season one, Yennefer and Tissaia have come to understand one another and are finally, finally, working together.
