Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is an addictive indie battle royale that seems to have one universally acknowledged problem - the yellow team - and developer Mediatonic has offered to completely delete the team if a recent Twitter post gets enough retweets. Mediatonic has confirmed no color has an advantage over the others, but that hasn't stopped players from designating the yellow team the game's worst, a reputation that Mediatonic has been all too happy to perpetuate on social media.
This kind of media narrative is par for the course based on other posts from the indie’s Twitter account so far. Ever since Fall Guys’ outstandingly popular release, its developer has shown equal skill at developing interesting social media content and game content. Lately, the Fall Guys Twitter account has received a burst of offers from various companies to collaborate on in-game skins, probably motivated by the developers’ public proposal to create Cyberpunk 2077-themed cosmetics. Instead of letting it stop there, Mediatonic transformed the frenzied interest into a very on-brand competition, stating it would work with the brand that donates the most to UK-based charity Special Effect.
As for the fate of the yellow team, a recent Fall Guys Twitter post claims that it is entirely in the hands of the community. The tweet presents a screenshot of a drop-down menu which appears to give the developers the ability to delete the disliked group with a single click. The accompanying text explains that one of the creators is up for erasing the team from the game if the post can get 1 million retweets. The declaration's popularity seemed to take the developers by surprise because, in a later update, they admitted the offer was a joke but now feel pressured to go through with the deletion if the post actually did hit its goal. Several hours later, the initial tweet has been shared by over 100,000 users and the number is rising quickly.
This kind of engagement has started to attract other kinds of attention to the game, both good and bad. Yesterday, the developers took to social media, not for fun and games, but to warn its expansive user base that there was a scam afoot. Ads recently started to show up on YouTube videos claiming the game has a mobile version, which is definitely not the case according to Mediatonic. In more light-hearted news, it seems that Fall Guys has also caught the eye of Animal Talking host and Star Wars screenwriter Gary Whitta, who expressed a desire to start a new talk show inside the battle royale.
It's interesting to see how social media can influence a game like Fall Guys. More than 100,000 fans have actively participated in ridding the world of the yellow team on Twitter. With their retweets, these fans have shared in Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout’s narrative in a way gamers usually don’t get to and this will probably keep them engaged with the virtual obstacle course for longer. It seems unlikely that the developers will actually make the decision to permanently delete team yellow - though it isn’t beyond the pale for them to choose a new team color - but with the goal set at 1 million retweets and no time limit, it might happen.
Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is out now on PC and PlayStation 4.
