Scorpion is one of the most important characters in the Mortal Kombat reboot, and it’s likely that he’s secretly the Elder Gods’ true champion. That prestigious title is one Scorpion has worn before in the Mortal Kombat video games, and there are a number of clues that the movie franchise is following the same story. If Scorpion turns out to be the Elder Gods’ champion, it could have major ramifications for both him and Cole Young in future Mortal Kombat films.
Mortal Kombat sets Hanzo Hasashi up as a main protagonist from the very beginning. The film opens with his duel against Sub-Zero and an explanation of the prophecy surrounding him – a prophecy declaring that the Hasashi bloodline would eventually claim victory in the Mortal Kombat tournament. Much of the movie is spent discussing Hanzo – who becomes Scorpion after his time in the Netherrealm – and trying to reach him, ultimately leading to his triumphant resurrection and rematch against Sub-Zero. After defeating his old rival, Scorpion departs the mortal world once more, leaving his descendant Cole Young behind to carry the family name.
All of that makes Scorpion one of the most important characters in the Mortal Kombat movie, but he could be even more important. In the games, the Elder Gods – ancient deities who watch over the different realms and created the Mortal Kombat tournament – once enlisted Scorpion to be their champion. That storyline could play out in much the same way in the film franchise, and there are a few clues hinting that it’s already in the works.
Scorpion plays many different roles through the Mortal Kombat mythos. He has at different times been a villain, a lackey, an antihero, an ally, and a teacher, among other things. For much of the early games, Scorpion is used largely as a weapon by more powerful foes, who manipulate his desire for vengeance for their own benefit. Scorpion serves both Shang Tsung and Quan Chi in this way, ultimately realizing that he was lied to and leaving their service for a more independent path.
In Mortal Kombat: Deception, the sixth core entry in the games series, Scorpion takes on a more important role – the chosen champion of the Elder Gods. The games story revolves around the resurrection of the Dragon King Onaga – Outworld’s ruler in the days before Shao Kahn. Onaga seeks to merge the different realms back into one in order to resurrect the One Being – an ancient creature of ultimate power. To prevent this, the Elder Gods select Scorpion to act out their will, imbuing him with enhanced powers and sending him on a quest across the realms to defeat Onaga before he could complete his apocalyptic plan.
The true identity of the Elder Gods’ champion is hidden through much of Mortal Kombat: Deception. The character Shujinko is led to believe that he is the chosen champion, but that turns out to be a lie told by Onaga in disguise to convince Shujinko to unwittingly do his bidding. Along the way, Shujinko even battles a character who resembles and fights like Scorpion, who claims to be the true champion of the Elder Gods. Though his story in Deception is a bit convoluted, Scorpion is still the true Champion, selected above many powerful warriors as the agent of the Elder Gods themselves.
A similar story could be told in the future Mortal Kombat movies because of the reboot’s focus on Scorpion and his bloodline. The prophecy that a Hasashi will win Mortal Kombat already puts Scorpion on a much different level than the other characters. It suggests that the Elder Gods, who constructed the universe as it stands and created the Mortal Kombat tournament to maintain order between the realms, chose him above all others to stand against the encroaching threat of Outworld. That’s a very similar setup to the one in Mortal Kombat: Deception.
Since Shang Tsung has already broken several of the rules of Mortal Kombat by going after Earthrealm’s warriors before the tournament, the deities may take a greater interest in the story in future films. And with Sub-Zero likely to be resurrected as Noob Saibot, Earthrealm will need Scorpion to hold the line. If the Hasashi prophecy is truly connected to the Elder Gods, they could bring Scorpion back from the dead permanently to face the universe’s future threats.
The Elder Gods will only become more important to the Mortal Kombat story as more movies get made. It’s also likely that, as the series continues, more and more dangerous villains will be brought from the games into the live-action world. That could include characters like Quan Chi, Shinnok, and even Onaga – especially if the movies intend to stay loyal to the storyline of the games. All that is to say that while Mortal Kombat 2 may still focus largely on the titular tournament, the story will eventually expand to much larger conflicts and threats.
Because of Cole Young, Scorpion is already a major protagonist in the new Mortal Kombat film franchise. Cole Young is the new main character, and as a descendant of Scorpion, he’s made the whole Hasashi clan pivotal to the story of the movies. As a new character, however, Cole doesn’t have much in the way of a unique story. His relevance is tied directly to his connection with Scorpion, and if Cole is to remain relevant character in perpetuity, Scorpion must as well. If Scorpion is revealed to be the Elder Gods’ champion, it could set up many more exciting team-up battles with him and Cole.
It’s also possible that Scorpion has already secretly been made the Elder Gods’ champion. His resurrection during Cole’s fight with Sub-Zero isn’t really explained, so it’s possible that the Elder Gods themselves meddled a bit to bring him back and thereby balance out Shang Tsung’s breaking of the rules. If that’s true, then Scorpion could keep being brought back in future battles to fight on the side of good. He could even become stronger than he is in the reboot if the Elder Gods decide to grant him part of their strength. It remains to be seen what role Scorpion will play in the Mortal Kombat movies going forward, but there are a lot of fun possibilities if they stick to the story of the games.
